In 2018 we challenged ourselves to using an array of fruit new to our palates and practices. When offered a high quality, freshly picked Black Currant sample, we couldn't resist. We present to you a metamorphosis for your sense. Using 12-36 month aged Agrestic Ale as a base, to which we add1.5lbs/gal Black Currants, the beer undergoes the final maturation in our French Oak "Fruiders" for an additional four months. A convergence of supple tanning and deep purple pigments, gooseberry jam, a month-watering acidity and earthy leather elicit notes of a beer having vinous roots. A new variant to one Barrelworks pioneers is born. Santé!

Draught @ Beavertown Extravaganza 2018. Heavy with blackcurrant and redcurrant notes, some tart berries, mild sourness and loads of funky farmyardy notes, hints of oak and wood. Quite complex and heavy berry juice Nice one.

375mL bottle, pours a deep dark purple-ish pink with a medium pink head. Aroma is loaded with tart black currants, jammy notes, light wild yeast and stone fruit pith. Flavour is along the same lines, with uber-jammy red currants, pithy fruits, and moderate tartness. Jammy, fruity and tart. Complex and wonderully balanced. Excellent.

Bottle thanks to Rainer. Pours a hazy ruby with small off white head that lasts. The aroma is strong french oak, currant, funk. Thin body, currant, cherry, oak, very sour, enjoyed this.

Draught, ES. Deep red-purple. Pink head. Lots of currants on the nose, lending almost a vinegary note, and it's almost got that butyric note...I mean it's there and it's almost too much. Tart, lots of fruit.

On tap at Stub & Herbs. Pours a clear deep purple with a purplish pink head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma is full of sweet and tart currant is with a bit of oak underlying. Flavor has a really nice tart currant with a touch of sweetness and a hint of oak supporting.

Bottle purchased at Downtown Wine & Spirits, Somerville. (Been a long time since I stepped foot into this place). Paid $14.99 plus tax for this gem. Nice deep purple parents within lasting pink head. Aroma is red grapes, red currents, and black currents. Subtle oak.
The flavor has the currents and oak without a question. It has a strong pucker and sharp lactic slap in the finish. Dry oak texture. Wow, sharp pucker. Massive tartness. The current character is bold and juicy. I don’t know if more age will calm the sharpness or make it stronger? As is, real good.

375 c&c from Cap Tap. Pours very bright dark berry red with a foamy pinkish head. Aroma is very black currant, but there's a tart tang as well. Med body at least. Flavor is black currant, but it's quite tart. Very lightly sour, maybe. But tart. Very dry. Astringent, even. Quite fruity, but bitter isn't in it. A little acidic. It has oh so many of the things desirable in a fruity sour/wild. Mouthwatering. Dark berry. Acidic. Astringent. And on and on and on. This is amazingly done. But where's the wood? It's there, but the other things kept my attention. But with time, there's wood. This is great stuff.
