In the spring of 2019, we received a series of very old Oloroso, PX and Amontillado barrels through a local Jerez cooperage. The aromas were a mix of typical fine sherry notes and toasted, peated characteristics, which we have never experienced before. However, after a year of bottle conditioning – because of the higher peated aromas, albeit balanced – we decided to release this bottle not as a Zenne y Frontera, but as a peated geuze.

750ml bottle. Funky and sourish with some hints of peat, smoke, sweetish sherry and woody notes. Interesting.

[9/4/9/4/16=4,2]

(Bottle, a sample, assemblage 62 - blend 19 - 20 - BB 26.10.2040, at Pien Shop, 20211231) The beer poured amber and hazy. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had fruitiness, sourness, wood, vanilla and tartness. Palate was medium bodied and dry with medium carbonation. Flavours were tartness, wood, sourness, vanilla, fruitiness, mildly sweetness and low bitterness. Aftertaste had sherry, peat, wood, tartness and bitterness. Delicious and complex brew.

750ml bottle from Beer Gonzo. It pours hazy orange with a handsome white cap. The aroma is musty, funky, good hit of barnyard, medicinal action, touch of peat reek, granny smith apples, tart berries, damp oak, raspberry, bramble, gooseberry, lemon sherbet, damp hay and a touch of vanilla. The taste is crisp, dry, tart, sharp citrus vibes, lemon peel, vibrant and punchy, gooseberry, granny smith apple upfront, but also quite a bit of red berry, splash of Oloroso, minerality, firmly dry, oaky tannins, definitely peat smoke and medicinal vibes with a drying musty berry finish. Medium body and moderate, dense / prickly carbonation. Great depth of flavour. Interesting and someone balanced. Really moreish. Super fun stuff.

Pours unclear blonde, small white head. Scent is full, tad fruity, somehow. Mild on the funk and oak. Taste is full, mild smoke, medium sour. Low on the funk, more on the peaty side than B62.

0.75 l bottle from 'Ace Drinks', n°62 • 19/20, bottled in April 2020. Hazy, golden amber with a medium large, frothy, almost stable, white head. Slightly sweetish, gently sourish, quite fruity, not too funky aroma of overripe lemon, oak, some horse blanket, gooseberry and some leather. A little sweet, gently sour, fairly peppery, quite fruity and slightly funky taste of overripe lemon, oak, leather, gooseberry, white pepper and some horse blanket, followed by a medium long, fairly woody-dry, gently tart, peppery finish. Medium body, smooth, slightly astringent and gently effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. Extremely well-balanced Gueuze, sublime stuff.
