Bottle shared at Bruce’s. It pours clear deep amber with a small white head. The nose is sweet fruit, stewed orange, nectarine, pine, varnish, sponge cake, light spice, sweet vanilla and toffee. The taste is warming, toffee, cake, raisin, varnish, light spice, dark fruit, orange, caramel, toast, plum and aniseed with a warming finish. Full body, fine carbonation and viscous mouth-feel. A decent quad, but too sweet and cloying to be that drinkable.

Hazy dark brown - amber beer. Good pale cream coloured head. Barleywine like nose. Smooth softish palate with mild fine carbonation. Sweet malt with a trace of toffee and cream. Sweet forest fruits - blackberry with lesser red berries. Like a vintage port! Whispers of sweet cinnamon and aniseed. Finishes smooth. An unusual and tasty beer!

Bottle from A Tutta Birra, Milan, bb 9-06-15
Dark amber to bright brown color, some ruby shades, and medium sized creamy head. Delicate aroma of star anise cookies. Full bodied, with nice malt flavor, sweetish and with moderate fruitiness; light star anise touch; medium to low bitterness, but the sweetness is mostly balanced by a warming alcohol presence; the final is just a bit dusty.
Peculiar, not bad at all; the usage of the star anise is very elegant, not overdone.

Probably my favourite Hardknott beer yet. Looks amazing, promises something spicy and inviting, is bittersweet, lively, and stays in my thoughts for days afterwards; like a late night tryst with someone you shouldn’t.
