500ml bottle. Deep, thick burgundy-brown with a beige head. Fruity caramel aroma, very mellow and milkshake like. Medium bodied, with some light, watery chocolate tones. Nice and bready, very soft on the palate. Yeasty creaminess really rounds this beer out, and gives it more dimension. Love to have it fresh on tap.

Drank from the bottle, unfortunately didn’t have a cup to pour into so I couldn’t properly assess aroma or color. Tastes smooth, if not a bit light. Hints of malt, dark fruit and caramel. Good mouthfeel, not great but good.

A lovely deep reddish-brown color with thin to no head. Chocolate/coffee aromas. Flavor is a nice mix of sweet and bitter. Palate a bit on the thin side with a nice finish to it. Interesting beer that is definitely worth a try.

Bottle. Creamy white good mostly lasting head. Red-amber colour. Moderate malty aroma. Molasse and caramellic notes. Light bitter flavor. Sweet and caramellic. Short light bitter finsih. Watery palate.

It is hard to find a better, true-to-style central European dunkel in the midwest. Brown with a red hue. Low carbonation, and a short lived, brown head. Aroma has malt and red meat. Lots of malt in the flavor, with fresh bread and lager yeast. Very smooth, and a good, sweet finish. Rerated 10/21/2011. Score unchanged. This time, I notice sediment floating in the beer, unusual for a dunkel, but I have no problem with that.

Draft, Bavarian Lodge. I had to squeeze in just one more before closing to wash out the unpleasant chile mead in my previous rating. A deep reddish brown color in the glass, with a light lacy head. Smell brings in darker malts, more familiar to a schwarzbier. A hearty, grainy dunkel taste. At the same time, reminds me of my very first dark beers (Schlitz Dark, way back in 1977). But it has the bones of a well-made doppelbock, too. A fine beer to finish off a night at a German stube.

Pours with a medium head, nice and fluffy. That fades into a decently thick lacing which grows easily as the glass is agitated. Color is clear ruby brown. Aroma is lagered berries and light, clean caramel lagered malts. Works well, the aromas bounce off of each other. Some light earthy/herbal German hops peaking through there as well. Taste has a bit more clean malt sweetness with a light mineral water and hop presence. The mineral aspect makes it super easy to drink. Just goes down easy with no thick or overbearing aspects. Light nutty sweetness tickles the aftertaste senses. Nothing alone is remarkable but it all comes together very nicely. Just so damn drinkable.
