New variation on Alvinne’s mouthwatering Cuvée de Mortagne theme, a Pedro Ximenez barrel-aged variant of their Mortagne ‘quadrupel’, which in practice is much more a hybrid of ‘oud bruin’ and quadrupel. The only difference between this version, launched at BCBF and brewed only in 550 litres, and the Pedro Ximenez version that was made three years ago, is that this one has allegedly matured on the barrels for even longer (17 months instead of 12). I'll leave it to the admins to decide whether this warrants aliasing of both entries or not. Draught at BCBF 2018, cheers Loik! Loose, egg-white, instantly open and eventually completely disappearing head over hazy, warm copper-bronze beer with ruddy hue. Intense, rich bouquet of pronounced oloroso sherry, ripe purple gooseberries, fermenting blue plums, stewed rhubarb, yoghurt, caramel, soaking wet oak wood, redcurrant, cognac. Estery onset, lovely grape-, plum- and gooseberry-like aspects blending inherent sweetness with a tart, softly drying lactic effect, full and smooth bready and caramelly malt base dried by this tartness, soft carb, full and vinous mouthfeel, rich warming finish with again very pronounced sherry as well as dryish tannic woodiness, with lingering yoghurty-lactic tartness and sugary sweetness as well. Another majestic Alvinne, perhaps still a tad young though, but there is no doubt in my mind that when bottled, this can only improve even further like the others in this series.
