Winters in the Sawtooth Mountains are cold, dark, and long, and it is easy to understand Out Cold. Our winter ale is brewed to be malty and bold without being sweet. We add a hearty amount of molasses to add complexity and to balance out the hint of hops, all while finishing dry and crisp.

Grain: Idaho Malted 2-Row Barley, Marris Otter, Caramel Malt, Flaked Barley, Victory Malt, French Chocolate Malt, Molasses

Hops: German Magnum, Cascade,German Northern Brewer, East KentGoldings

Bottle. Chestnut brown with a thin beige head. Cocoa and light spice in the nose, somewhat sweet. Roast and bittersweet cocoa emerge in the taste, along with a little more spice. Clean finish. Nice winter ale.

22 oz bottle from Boise Co-op. Murky brown pour with very small airy head. Dark malt dominates the aroma, elements of porter, brown and English Strong ales readily apparent. Minor hints of molasses apparent in the taste, some fruitiness, but malt still rules. Dry and chalky mouthfeel, no signs of the 8.6% ABV. Would not put this in the spice/herb/vegetable category.

On tap at Bier:Thirty, Boise Black with the classic "bubbles going up" after he nitro pour. Dense light tan head, again owing to the Nitro. Soft light roast maltiness. A touch bitter at the end. Quite mild flavors over all. Clean and well attenuated a touch of ashtray and campfire soot at the end. 8.6% ?! Really. And "...it comes in pints"
