The Memmelsdorf cult-beer: Drei Kronen "Stöffla"! Not for nothing our smokey beer specialty was honored with the gold medal of the European Beer Star 2003. And the balanced taste is also excellent: The delicate, smoky note and the fine aroma hops (from Spalt) in the nose form a taste symbiosis that unfolds on the palate.

500ml bottle, thanks to djoeye for sharing. Next to clear dark amber body, beige head with firm retention. Fair lacing. Bacon on the nose. Smoked malty taste, ham and bacon, with fruity hints beneath. Restrained smoked ending. Medium bodied. Soft on the swallow. Nice and likable. (Rating session with Finn and djoeye, Pivoteka H7, Tromsø 25.09.2017).

Daler sakte. God baconaroma. Smaken røyk & blomster. Et behagelig - litt forsiktig - røykøl.

Draught @Brauereigasthof Drei Kronen. Hazy to cloudy amber brown, good frothy beige head, good retention, heavy lacing. Mild aroma, smoked malts, caramel, light bacon, brown sugar, light woody. Taste medium sweet and bitter, malty, smoky, woody, bit brown sugar, toffee. Mild smoked sweetbitter finish, touch of wood; medium body, watery to oily texture, soft carbonation. All in all a mild and well-balanced rauchbier, very nice, less outspoken than similar Bamberger rauchbeers and because of that (?) very drinkable.

Draught at the brewery. Orange-brown, dark, clear, tall pillowy head. Lots of ham in the nose, with some brown sugar basting, salty almost, not huge smoke, but huge ham. A bit sweet and thin. Ham turns more to brown sugar and caramel. Smoke gets almost lost. Too fruity for the style, lots of esters, peaches, pineapple even. Not at all bad, just all over the place.

On tap at the brewery. It’s good. Good smoke. I have had other countries interpretation of the style but no one does it as good as Franconia. Solid tasty as hell. Again just a little empty in the mouth. Good smoke though

Tap at the Gasthof, Memmlesdorf - 28/04/12. Dark mid amber in colour with a medium frothy white-ish head. Toasted smoked malts on the nose, subtle smoking, woody charr. Flavours as per nose with a little carmel/toffee, malts are heavier in the taste and the smoking again subtle. Crisp finish with a little lingering smoke. Good Rausch.
