Brewed in the English barleywine tradition, Brick Kiln’s deep mahogany hue gives way to aromas and flavors of English toffee, caramel, and raisin. This beer is named in tribute to the Southeast Ohio brick industry. The kilns of Athens Brick Company, established in 1890, once operated down the street from our current production brewery.

Sample at Jackie O’s as part of Ohio Brew Week. The beer is a dark brown color with a slight reddish tint and a medium tan head that diminishes steadily. Partial rings of sticky lacing. Aroma of toasted malt and hops. Full-bodied with flavors of roasted malt, dark fruit and resiny hops, plus a touch of oak. The finish is hoppy at first and leaves a caramel malt aftertaste. Good Barley Wine overall.

A nice but imperfect beer. Nose amd flavor dominated by a bittersweet chocolate, some caramel and hints of a raisiny fruit. Touches of astringency and maybe too much alcohol burn for only 9%abv. Carbonation is about right, being light but not still. Full but not overwhelming mouthfeel. Dark brown almost stout like appearance.
