Each bottle of Prize Old Ale is cork-finished, sealed, and numbered. Prize Old Ale is unfiltered and unpasteurized. It is brewed from floor malted Maris Otter and minute amounts of black malt. Hops are Fuggles, Goldings and Challenger. It is reddish in color with hops and apple fruit on the nose, spicy and malty in the mouth, and a dry, even tart fruity finish with hints of raisins and apple.
The slow work of the yeast in the bottle may increase the alcohol content to 12% or even more. After several years of aging Prize Old Ale gains a more complex palate with Calvados like character. It is said that Prize Old Ale is at its best after 20 years of maturing. e hop flavors and fruity estery flavors to predominate.

Flaske innkjøpt hos Høkeren, København feb-11: et flott eksempel på en nesten utdøende stilart, engelsk old ale. Nesten vinøs i smaken. Synd at det var den siste flasken.

2010-02-21, pint-sized cap bottle, from Fuller’s this time, vintage 2007, 2 years old, 6-4-7-3-12=32
Dark brown color, smallest head. Sourish caramel aroma, feet, alcohol. Correct body strength, dark caramel flavor, light puke sourness, quite strong bitterness in the end. I don’t like the light presence of roasted malt, the puke character and the bitterness. Disappointed.

Bottled, 0.5l. Clear amber brown color, medium sized tan alike head and lively carbonation. Very rich aroma with strong notes of caramel, dried fruits and sherry, while hops are smelled only directly from the bottle. Sweet fruity start, followed by sherry hit in the head. Mouthfeel is warming, while finish is very lightly bitter. Full bodied with oily texture and lively carbonation in palate. Decent quality, but really too strong for my taste...

cloudy brown, small beige head. old beery malty aroma, some stale hops, flavor is caramelly, malty and slightly citrussy. The faint sourness suits the beer very well, not sure if it is intended, but it is refreshing and tasty.

Bottle 50 cl. Pours a cloudy orangey brown with a rough, off-white head. Tart aroma of sour overripe fruits. Medium body, soft carbonation, vinegary notes, brown sugars and a ton of overripe fruit and wood - very oxidized! Subtle roast. Hardly any bitterness but an ammonia note towards the finish. Quite complex! 200712
