The Duck-Rabbit Barleywine is the hoppiest of all the Duck-Rabbit brews. This is a Farmville-style Barleywine, crafted the way brewers in Farmville have always done. Loads of Amarillo hops give a piney citrusy bitterness that’s supported beautifully by a toffee malt backbone.

@Olde Hickory-on tap-pours a retaining tight light tan head that laces with hazy amber color. Aroma is sweet medium malt, medium fruit. Taste is sweet medium malt, medium/dark fruit-cherry with some sour, wood, spice hops.

A bit of a sour aroma. Malts, berries, fruits, hot alcohol, too. Flavor is fairly sweet malt, light caramel, hot alcohol. Has a nice fruity, berry flavor, as well. The liquor is very noticeable. Pretty good, but the alcohol is a bit on the hot side.

Bottle: Bright and illuminating amber pour with a modest creamy beige head. Nose is heavy in the floral hops, yet potent with citrus. A little caramel to smooth it out. Flavor is heavy in the citrus and brings the heat with the abv. Some caramel in the background to smooth it out, but still pretty hot. Citrus really plays a prominent role, which I am enjoying. Enjoyable as it sits, but with some age it could be magnificent...

Bottle courtesy of a traveling colleague. This Barley Wine is a clear dark amber color with a medium light beige head that recedes slowly. Patchy lacing on the glass. Sweet caramel malt and fruit in the nose, plus a dose of hops. Medium body with flavors of hops, sweet caramel malt and toffee, as well as sweet fruit. The finish is sweet up front with more caramel and toffee and leaves a lightly hopped aftertaste. Pretty good all around.

Deep cherry tinted brown coloured body with a thinnish tan head and some movement throughout. Strong aroma of alcohol, fresh hops, malt, pit fruits, apricots and more fresh hops - strong as hell. Full-bodied; Deep pungent alcoholic flavours with fresh hops, apricots, malt and a bit of caramel coming through. Aftertaste is more rounded, with fruits and caramel coming through equally with alcohol and hops - very nice. Overall, a super potent and alcoholic barley wine - very nice for those expecting a hoppy and potent barleywine with some rough edges. I really enjoyed this and don’t really understand how isn’t not higher ranked - this one has some real quality. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Chevy Chase Wine & Spirits in Washington, DC on 13-May-2010, sampled on the Eastern Shore of Virginia on 30-May-2010, with a best by date of February 2011.

Bottle, $2.50 from Beer Run in Charlottesville. Pours a brownish-red with a 2" soft head. Smells of bitter grapefruit, dark fruits- passion fruit? -, and pine. Smells slightly like a good IPA to me. Deep flavors here. Black cherry, passion fruit, chocolates, pine, flowers, and alcohol. Wow. Very nice.

09 bottle from craftbeerdesign. Pours ruddy copper with a nice beige head. Warm malt aroma with a decent hop aroma. Medium body with foamy carbonation. Flavor is warm malt with some nice hop bitter, and toffee. Finishes toffee. Quite warming, yet the heat is not detectable. Great ale.

June ’09....Ruddy brown..just a skimming of foam....nothin’ but malts...strong malts on the nose...Frank smells a burnt pound cake...I only smell the sweetness of it....deep full and pungent with hop undertones...thick syrupy cereal sweet...alcohol abundant...bitter sweet vanilla--not too shabby...its simple and a little cakey tasting...light lacing--just dandy, but I could use more dimension in this bottle

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a ruby chestnut color with a medium sized khaki head. The aroma was sour, tangy caramel, molasses and ripe fruits. The flavor was sour, tangy and nutty with a slightly rancid caramel note and light fruity and floral hops. Something was off on the flavor of this one that did not work for me. Disappointing.
