Imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels

Namesake aside, this bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout is worthy of pouring every day of the week. Both elegant and complex, it exemplifies over 10 years of experience in barrel-aging technique. Notes of dark chocolate and vanilla are rounded out with hints of freshly picked cherries, dried figs, and molasses.

Beer #3 of my 10,00th Beer Milestone Celebration! Super dark brown coloured body with a very nice, super rich tan head that's about two centimetres tall, somehow microfoamed and stays atop the 90 per cent opaque dark brown body nicely - this looks great, especially for how long it's spent in the bottle. Aroma of vanilla, cream, rich icing sugar, a ton of lactose, a lot of roasted malts, some caramelised sugars, oatmeal and a heavy dose of bourbon here - this one is intense in the nose in a good way, but showing a surpring amount of sugars here coupled with the alcohol and maltiness - nice in the nose. Full-bodied; Intense and super strong malts show at first with a bunch of oatmeal, roasted grains, some rye coupled with a deep coffee finish and some caramelised sugars all showing quite strong, but the lactose, yeast and sugars somehow temper this robust quality and leave the palate very sweet and pretty well balanced, somehow, but the alcohol, additional sugars, creamy quality do show through, but are muted very well, as are the bourbony, liqour notes that are here, but are managed nicely. Aftertaste shows some deep cream, vanilla, lactose and pure rich pungency that is left alone, with a slight coffee and especially chocolatey characteristic that comes through near the end, perhaps on the easier-side drinking of this one, but the rich lactose, cream, vanilla and sweetness probably help out with this quite a bit. Overall, this is very well muted, considering the pungency here with a great profile, a nice flavour, some smooth complexity with a big, boozy hit of course and while I'm not sure how anyone could get to this in a single day (it took me only two days!), it is VERY nice and much better than I was expecting. I'm not sure how much the bottle aging that I did helped out here, but this was very smooth for the style and held up pretty nicely in my basement for 7+ years! I sampled this 75 cL bottle, purchased from Liqour Outlet in Boonton, New Jersey on 26-November-2016 for US$18,89 when I only had two young kids, sampled as Beer #3 [of 21 - 10 (for 10,000) of Each side of the 10,000 Beer Milestone and the 10,000th itself!] of my 10,000th Beer Milestone, and sampled at my house here in Washington on 28-April-2023.

0.44l can many thanks to Lore. Black body with a thin pearl head. Aroma and taste of booze, chocolate, nutmeg and burnt sugar. The base beer seems to be nice, but to be honest it's way too boozy for me.

Fairly thin, boozy, a bit bitter. Coffee and cocoa, rich bourbon, a bit of caramel. Smooth, very nice.

What a monster. Lots of dark chocolate, berry, cascara, molasses, oak, and oh so much bourbon. Acidity seems a bit high, but this pint is ridiculously drinkable for a 15% beer. Not my favorite, but I’m enjoying it.

Can. Very dark brown with a vanishing light tan head. Aroma of mocha, Bourbon, some dried fruit. Lots of Bourbon in the taste. Not all that sweet with little overt booze but a surprising lack of bottom end grunt. Finish has some nicely peppery oak. Pleasant enough but too much about Bourbon and not enough about stout for me. After a while its strength is dulling.
