A dark brew, hardy and warming with a slightly sweet malty character balanced by a pleasant hoppiness. Blackfriar is known as a 'wee heavy'. Whilst not an international classification this term has been used in Scotland for generations to describe strong ales

Bottle from Tomlinsons in Inverness. Poured a dark rusty copper colour, slight haziness, with a decent head fading with some lacing. Aroma of caramel, dark fruit, dates and spice. Medium sweetness, light bitterness, slight dryness to finish. Medium body, slick texture. Decent if unspectacular.

330 ml bottle. Pours a dark mahogany with light ot moderate head. Aromas of sweet malts, bread, and golden raisins. Flavors of dusty malts, breadcrusts, burnt caramel, and old apples. Bitter finish. Odd for a Scotch Ale - more a strong Amber. 13

12 oz. bottle, pours a clear amber with a small beige head. Aroma brings out bubblegum, caramel malt, and syrup. Flavour brings out scotch malts, caramel, and dry bready malts. Very dry, Scottish-tasting and bready. Not overly complex, but still quite decent.

Hazy dark amber color with small compact head. Aroma and flavor are loaded with vegetables, asparagus, there are some cereals, and some alcohol. Unexciting.
