A dark brew, hardy and warming with a slightly sweet malty character balanced by a pleasant hoppiness. Blackfriar is known as a 'wee heavy'. Whilst not an international classification this term has been used in Scotland for generations to describe strong ales

Bottle, 11C. Dirty amber with a pale beige head.Aroma of toffee, spice, flowers, surprisingly strong citrus - oranges, grapefruit. Slightly solventish. Lowish carbonation is nice, quite creamy textured. Sweet caramel, peach. Spices, light floral. Quite hoppy, but the citrus disappears. Gentle finish with a little bitterness. Well in date, but maybe didn’t travel that well.

0.5l bottle. A blurry kinda dark amber almost brown looking one in the glass and it has a medium sized first bubbly then more creamy and lacing (which by the way looks like tiger strips) light beige top. On the nose it gives away sweet malty toffee sweetness with a fudge like present. Also there are traces of yeast and dried dark fruits. It actually smells fairly nice this. It has a mild oily mouthfeel and the carbonation is soft and gentle. Tastes much the same as it smells. It's malty and caramel sweet, a little bit of wet rocks and yeasty nuts. A little peppery arugula like sting in the finish and aftertaste makes it even more interesting. A little bit of alcohol is also present here. Got way more than I was expecting. 13.11.2013

Cask at Ericht Ale House, Blairgowrie. Clear amber with good white head. Malty aromas, light spiciness. More malt on the taste, slight nutty note. Not much going on really.

Thanks to ThirstyBird for this beer. Dark red-brown colour. Nose is fruity. The beer is smooth, fruity. Not too sweet but something viscous. The aftertaste is medium, not too deep and not really complex.

Nydelig blanding av malt og alkohol, med humle litt nedtonet. Pen wee heavy, med litt kanter når den varmes.

Bottle on the train from Inverness to Hereford, from Tomlinsons the Ness, 21/10/13. Dark amber with a good sized light beige head. Nose is toffee, bready malts, dark fruit tang, dates, fruit loaf. Taste comprises brown sugars, dates, Xmas cake, dark fruit mash up, brown bread, Soreen malt loaf. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, sweetish finale. Ok stuff - comes across as a Belgian Dubbel type of affair.
