No, this has nothing to do with Barack Obama, or even Nelson Mandela. This is a tribute to the original ‘Black President’; the legendary Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Afro beat pioneer, and one of my favorite artists.
When I imagined an African 70s funk style beverage, I saw a warm, rich and full-bodied beer with some (for me) exotic African ingredients.
This is basically an oatmeal session porter, with millet instead of oats. I added carob molasses in the whirlpool to add some rich fruity and slightly tart notes. To top it off, I used South African J17 hops throughout the boil, together with a pinch of Sorachi Ace.
