Franciscan Well Chieftain IPA is a hugely popular IPA, and Franciscan Well’s answer to Ireland’s growing demand for IPA style beers. IPA’s are traditionally high hopped to deliver intense bitterness that lingers on the palate which usually limits what you can drink or taste after it.

With Chieftain IPA, Shane wants everything an IPA has to deliver, but he wants you to be able to enjoy another beer after it. Chieftain IPA is a great stepping stone into the land of big and bitter.

From tap at the VQ Open 23 Hours Restaurant near Tottenham Court Road. Translucent nut colour. Sweet aroma and taste of syrup, sweet malt, butterscotch and caramel. Underwhelming bitterness. Perhaps a hint of pineapple.

(On tap) Clear amber with small white head. There’s a problem net citrus aroma with something unusual, maybe red berries in the background. Medium body with medium fine carbonation. Taste is fruity throughout - pine, citrus, maybe grenadine notes. There’s the barest biscuity malt and some modest hoppy bitterness in the finish. Unusual IPA, and very drinkable.

Caramel bomb. Not much hops or sense of pale ale here. Pours orange with ok head. Sweet and syrupy texture. Can.
