Franciscan Well Chieftain IPA is a hugely popular IPA, and Franciscan Well’s answer to Ireland’s growing demand for IPA style beers. IPA’s are traditionally high hopped to deliver intense bitterness that lingers on the palate which usually limits what you can drink or taste after it.
With Chieftain IPA, Shane wants everything an IPA has to deliver, but he wants you to be able to enjoy another beer after it. Chieftain IPA is a great stepping stone into the land of big and bitter.

On tap at Bittles Bar, pours a clear copper with a medium beige head. Nose is full of dry English hops, lots of bready malt and some metallic notes. Flavour is along the same lines, with English hops, toffee and bready malt. Pretty decently balanced but not my type of thing really. Decent, but not overly enjoyable.

On keg at Holyrood 9A. Appearance - golden amber with a decent head. Nose - a hint of tropical fruit but mostly citrus pith and zest. Taste - definitely more on the citrus fruit than on the tropical fruit side. Palate - light to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a long bitter finish. Overall - decent example of the style.

Keg @ EBBC14, Dublin [270614]
Dark amber burnt orange, off white head, some lacing
Aroma of soft sweet fruity caramel malts, dry grapefruit hop nose, soft herbal hop
Taste of soft sweet caramel malts, soft grapefruit, mainly bitter hops, some citrus zest, slightly grassy, hop profile is more towards the bitter end than the fruity one, caramel malts and bitter hops do work together well in this
Palate - soft carb, medium body, good sweet malt and bitter hop balance. Finish is a little dry, some bitter zest.
Overall - Not a bad IPA at all

On draft, bright gold to amber, medium white head that lasts, some lacing on the glass. Big citrus aroma from the citra hops, floral, some fruit, solid caramel malt backbone in the flavor, long bitter finish. Very decent IPA.
