Franciscan Well Chieftain IPA is a hugely popular IPA, and Franciscan Well’s answer to Ireland’s growing demand for IPA style beers. IPA’s are traditionally high hopped to deliver intense bitterness that lingers on the palate which usually limits what you can drink or taste after it.

With Chieftain IPA, Shane wants everything an IPA has to deliver, but he wants you to be able to enjoy another beer after it. Chieftain IPA is a great stepping stone into the land of big and bitter.

Keg at the Glyde Inn, Annagassan, 05/06/16. Clear golden amber with a decent white head. Nose is caramel malt, bitter orange, hop dusting, light marmalade. Taste comprises caramel malt, grapefruit, toasted bread, orange marmalade. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close dashed with earthy hop bitterness. Decent enough well balanced IPA.

Draught Good thick off-white head over clear orange beer. Rosewater, bit cheesy New World hops, sweetened orangepeel. Bitterish but ending again in rosewater; citrus. Rather refreshing; light to medium bodied. Maybe mainstream, but certainly not bad IPA.

Keg at Great Expectations, Reading, served in an attractive tall brewery-branded pint jug. Clear copper with a thick creamy head. ’Merican hoppy aroma is not overbearing, suggesting sweetness as well as citrus hops. This initial impression carries on into the flavour, with pink grapefruit and orange juxtaposing pleasantly against caramel and toffee. There’s some peachy notes too. Despite the underlying sweetness, the hops keep the beer crisp and very drinkable. It is let down a little by a hint of pine disinfectant when one burps, but remains a great IPA with better balance than most.

A quite decent and nice IPA. Better than the usual British IPA. Not as hoppy as the American versions. Clear golden color with a fine white head. Tropical fruity, malty, pine and citric hoppy. Medium body and an ok carbonation. Ok balance between sweetness and bitterness.
[On tap at Norseman 1696 in Dublin, Ireland]
