Brown Ale - Imperial Special Out of Production
Score
7.70
ABV: 13.2% IBU: 28 Ticks: 106
The first beer brewed for the barrel aging program and has been brewed every year since. Originally named after an experimental variety of hops but now brewed with US grown Fuggles which are earthy and resinous. A lean, simple barley wine brewed to showcase barrel flavors with massive bourbon barrel notes that morph as the beer warms in the glass.

2017 bottle. Hazy dark reddish-brown color with a medium beige head that diminishes gradually to a film. Patches of lacing on the glass. The aroma consists of oak, dark fruit, malt and hops. Full-bodied with flavors of oaky bourbon, berry, caramel malt and earthy hops. The finish is sweet with a bourbon and malt aftertaste. Good beer all around.

(355ml 2017 bottle from Systembolaget) Pours a clear deep mahogany with a small cream coloured head. Aroma of brown sugar, toast, oak, dried berries, vanilla, nuts, soft cocoa powder, light earth, and of course bourbon. Flavour is relatively sweet, lead by dark toffee, butterscotch and bourbon, vanilla notes are prominent as is more overt oak, somewhat toasted, some raisins and other dried fruits, a bit of earthy hop character, light cocoa. Finish is semi-dry, lots of wood, bourbon, nutty roast, soft vanilla and earth, combined with a decent chunk of alcohol heat and spirit feel. Medium bodied, slightly fizzy nature to the carbonation. It meets the intent of being a barrel showcase, I might honestly prefer a more complex malt bill in this sort of beer but it's straightforward and nice to drink.

Tap at Before 9. Cloudy brown with no head. Nose is treacle, caramel, bourbon, vanilla. Very big, sweet, heavy with bourbon all over the place and sweet caramel. Powerful and tasty but not all that complex. Some resinous hops.

Bottle on premise consumption at Farmhouse Tap &Grill, Burlington, VT. Dark brown color, very light lacing. So much to say but going to keep this brief: Oak/ bourbon is a lasting presence without ever becoming overwhelming. Mild vanilla, coconut, nuts. The barrel enhances the base beer without question. Slight warming after the sip. However, the alcohol is very restrained for the over 13%. Pretty exceptional for a brown ale.

2017 bottle. Pours deep mahogany into a tulip. Mocha head with medium retention recedes to hug rim. Sweet caramel, maple, and kirsch aromas. Sweet hot cherries and maple upfront turning to dry, hot maple syrup in the warm, lasting finish.

Draught @ Blind Tiger. Murky reddish brown with very small frothy beige head, wiossy aroma, sweetish caramel malt taste with woodsy flavor, smooth body, long sticky sweet finish. Too sweet for my taste.
