The first beer brewed for the barrel aging program and has been brewed every year since. Originally named after an experimental variety of hops but now brewed with US grown Fuggles which are earthy and resinous. A lean, simple barley wine brewed to showcase barrel flavors with massive bourbon barrel notes that morph as the beer warms in the glass.

Bottle. Arcade Beers, Huddersfield. Missus got me this one. Clear, deep amber colour. Managed to pour in a few floaters. Slim ring of beige head. Nose has big bourbon notes, although I'd easily mistake these for old sherry, or even port barrel aromas. Raisins. Vanilla pod. Old Jamaica chocolate bars spring to mind. A bit woody and leathery. A bit herbal and medicinal. Taste is sweet and boozy. Lots of vine fruit stickiness. Some estery dryness. Mouthfeel is relatively light, with low, prickly carbonation. The ABV is apparent in so much as it numbs the teeth, somewhat. Loses the stickiness as it goes, and takes on a dark sherry like vibe. Nice. My gums feel like they have melted and my sinuses have never felt clearer, so that must be a good thing?

Dark brown, beige head is soon a bare coat. A: Dark sugars, bread and lots of Bourbon and oak (pepper, vanilla, char) 7-8 It’s nice but is as much marinade as beer. 7 But there’s a lot more beer on the palate. It is very sweet but has some malty depth and relegates the Bourbon to prominent part of the conversation. Bread, caught toffee, some fudge. Bitterness is firm (& a tad earthy and spicy) and there’s that and a bit of booze (not much, considering) at the end.

Bottle. #5000! Dark brown pour. Aroma of delicious bourbon vanilla, oak, ripe fruit, caramel, fudge, raisin, butter and malt. Flavor has thick lucious bourbon vanilla, oak, caramel fudge, raisin, caramelised malt and a really long delicious bourbon finish. Absolutely fantastic, the bourbon really shines. Onward to the next 5k!
