The first beer brewed for the barrel aging program and has been brewed every year since. Originally named after an experimental variety of hops but now brewed with US grown Fuggles which are earthy and resinous. A lean, simple barley wine brewed to showcase barrel flavors with massive bourbon barrel notes that morph as the beer warms in the glass.

355ml bottle. 2017 vintage. (13.2% ABV) Pours a hazy ruby-brown with lots of sediment floating around and a small, short lived, fully dissipating, beige head. Sweet aroma of caramel malt, dark fruit, bourbon, vanilla and oak. Sweet flavour of caramel malt, toffee, molasses, chocolate, vanilla, dark fruit, brown sugar, nuts and oak with a dry, bourbon warming finish. Full body with a smooth, slick texture and soft carbonation. Well balanced, excellent.

Bottle at home. Clear dark caramel-ruby pour with a thin tan head. Notes of bourbon, caramel, toffee, vanilla, coconut, some bittering hops, light roasted malts, resinous bitterness and quite a bit of booze in the finish. Medium to full body, medium carbonation and a bitter-sweet and alcohol-spicy finish. Another great barrel-aged beer from Firestone-Walker, though I confess to having a weakness for their beers. --- Beer merged from original tick of Bravo (2017) on 03 May 2017 at 19:44 - Score: 8.
