While the malt and hops give this beer an amazing copper color, medium body, and a smooth mouth feel; it’s the yeast that sets this one apart from other amber ales. Inspired by Belgium’s beer, women and mussels we thought it would be cool to give our Amber a little Belgian touch. We accomplish this by using an “almost Belgian” yeast strain producing similar esters and flavors commonly found in more traditional Belgian beers.

Well this was pouring a beautifully clear deep amber color, but I failed to realize this was bottle conditioned and the last little bit fell into the glass and muddied it up pretty good.Tightly bubbled white head shows moderate retention and lace. Smells a bit fruity with a fair bit of yeasty esters. Caramel and brown sugar round out the nose. Taste is sweet and malty with a Belgian flair to it. Sweet brown sugar and caramel mixed with a bit of tart dark fruit and a decent amount of earthy and yeasty esters. Medium body and level of carbonation with a sweet almost sticky mouthfeel. This is a different amber ale for sure, but quite tasty just the same. Ironically I poured this without knowing the brewers intent and had to look up the description on their website to make sure I wasn’t drinking an infected bottle.

Bottle. Clear, deep amber body. Small, off-white head, rapidly diminishing. Malty aroma of caramel, bread, toasted grain, raw grain. The flavor is lightly to moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery body, moderate carbonation. The flavors don’t work well together. Raw grain and thin caramel and an earthy taste below that. Bland and amateurish, especially for Dark Horse.

Purchased at Hyde Park Wine & Spirits in Cincinnati, OH; enjoyed on a nice Thursday night while setting up a joint checking account, good times! Appearance like mud water, a really cloudy copper brown with almost no head, very small carbonation bubbles rising to the top. Aroma is rather malty, mostly caramel malts, considerable sweetness, almost a Belgian ale yeast quality to it. Taste is really similar to a Belgian, has a sweetness from caramel malt combined with a hint of clove, a little bit of fruitiness as well. Did they put the wrong label on this one? It’s pretty good, not outstanding but I can hang with it during my bank set-up duties.

Bottle, 12oz. A clear, copper colored beer with a small, off-white head. The aroma is a bit weak, with caramel maltyness and some fruityness. The flavor is pretty much the same, rather boring that is. Caramel and some fruityness. A touch of bitterness towards the end. Some sourness, citric sourness. Overall, rather boring and uninteresting, was expecting more from Dark Horse. 110416
