Scotch ales are characterized by their full body, pronounced malty sweetness and low hop levels. Generally deep amber to brown in color, with caramel and subtle roasted malt flavors, Scotch ales can feature smoky flavors (derived from a small measure of peated malt) or, more traditionally, no smoky flavor.

Our Scotch Ale is a bold amber beer that balances smooth rich sweetness with a hint of smoked malt. The infusion of this subtle smokiness invites images of heather fields, platters of haggis, & the poetry of William McGonagall. Enjoy one with your mates!

Aged 22 oz. bottle from 2007. Got @ Smuttynose today before the Saturday tour. Deep muddy brown in color in my snifter. Thin off white head, plenty of retention. Nose is an underlying peat covered by rich, sweet malt. Flavors of dark malts, toffee, candy sugar does have a good presence in the body. Peat and mild smokiness is there but it is more sweet then smoky. The malt depth is nice without overwhelming you with sweetness. Carbonation is low, texture is on the dry side. Not quite as good as Ale Smith Wee Heavy but very respectable.

Smuttynose Scotch-Style Ale is a damn good, silky-smooth eerily drinkable Americanized Scotch ale. Doesn’t look or smell all that great, but the flavor is deep and thick and gooey, malty with a roasty Scotch fade. Honey and peat mingle with a warm, buttery bittersweet finish, one that keeps the beer heavy yet honest. Not a huge Scotch Ale, but a tasty, filling one. (2/24/09)

2008 bottling sampled 11/11/2008 Pours a crystal clear brownish red with a fluffy off white head that sticks around for a bit and laces the sides on the way out. Smells malty. Lots of smoke and dark fruit in there with the smoke being the dominant aroma. Tastes of smokey malt, toffee, sweet malty goodness. A little roast and some alcohol peak their heads up in the middle, but the smoke takes over for the finish. Syrupy mouthfeel, medium to thick in the body, medium carbonation. Great smokey scotch ale, I’m going to have to try one from last year and compare.

Bomber from Josh, who seems closer to joining the site. Bottle conditioned in 2008. Pours a rather dark ruby with a large fluffy beige head. Aromas of dark malt, light smoke, and significant darkish fruits. Medium body with mild creamy/frothy carbonation. Flavor is dark malt, smoke, wood, something like dates. Quite pleasant. Well balanced, but leans towards dry. Mildly astringent in the long haul. Good stuff.

Location: 22 oz bottle from State Line, 9/3/09

Aroma: Malts, roasted nuts, some smokey wood, alcohol
Appearance: Nice brown color with a slight red hue, about 1 inch of tan head, some sheeting lace
Flavor: Nice dark malts, caramel malts, earhty/smokey pete, nice balance between these flavors
Palate: Medium-full body, silky smooth, richer up-front and lightens through the finish (borderline 3/4)
Overall Impression: I thought this beer was pretty solid for sure. It worked really well, I could see offering criticisms based on it being a touch too sweet, maybe thinning too much through the palate, or perhaps less smoke then advertised, but I found that it worked well. Definitely enjoying some of these beers from the Smutty "Big Beer Series" when I get a chance to try them, and this one was no exception.
