Can from the Grumpy Goat, Reading. Brown-black with a tan head and a light fizz. Smells of dank wet pine and burnt wood. Slightly odd milky texture. Taste is more pine, chocolate, floral notes, burnt wood, a little blackcurrant and some pepper. Finish is very dry and moderately bitter and leaves behind an almost acrid burntness. A bit too burnt and dry and with too much piney cascade hop for me, I’m afraid, but it’s certainly fully flavoured.

Can from The Beerhive. Black body with a thin beige head. Good lacing. Aroma of milk chocolate and lemon pith. Flavour of gooseberry and pine. Medium body with a creamy mouthfeel. Soft fizz. A light, unusual beer. It’s not hoppy enough to be a Black IPA so I think the Black IPL description is apt.

330ml can @ Chez Sophie. Pours black, off white head. Roasty aroma with a sweet hop presence. Taste has good moderately bitter roast with a nice hoppy herbal citric fruit edge. Some spice. Some choc. Good stuff.

Dark brown to black colored, medium tan frothy head, some sediment. Aroma is of some chocolate, bit roasty, tropical fruity and some citrus, bit pine, moderate hoppiness. Taste is medium sweet malt, some caramel, bit chocolate and some roast, medium tropical and citrus fruit, some pine with medium bitterness, dry finish with some coffee, bit alcohol. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, oily. Don’t really get the lager part, but hops are aplenty.

Can 33cl, BB 20.05.2017. Brune voire ambre, col beige.
