Dunkelweizen by BrewDog, brewed in Berlin after the takeover of Stone’s installation there – and very confusingly named, as this Weizen has nothing to do with Berliner Weisse. Medium thick, moussy, membrane-lacing, egg-white head, misty deep chocolate brown robe with ruddy-bronze hue. Aroma of hard caramel, unsugared bubblegum, dried fig, tea bags, whipped cream, clove, plaster, banana peel, rainwater, damp kitchen cloth somewhere. Clean onset, some banana peel, fig and prune accents, pear perhaps, fizzy carbonation, soft and smooth but also somewhat thinnish mouthfeel; slight minerally accents accompany a slick brown-bready and caramelly maltiness with soapy-wheaty edges, but again everything remains a bit thin and straightforward. Clove- and nutmeg-like spicy notes retronasally, with these rainwater and plaster aspects continuing too; light earthy hop bitterish note in the end, with some sourishness and soapiness of the wheat lingering about. This whole beer feels like some large and industrial non-German brewing company producing a Dunkelweizen – and this is not too far from the truth, considering BrewDog’s expansion throughout the years; thin, watery, plastery, lacking in maltiness and missing the fine spicy and fruity yeast effect a ‘real’ Bavarian Weissbier tends to have. Not a very successful attempt at this style, I’m afraid – to think about the great things BrewDog has done in the past only makes this fact more difficult to digest.
