Atwater’s HopApeel is a frontal assault on the American IPA style that features not only the classic American Cascade and Chinook hops, but two of the new “Super Cascade” varieties in both the kettle and in the dry hop. Dried and ground orange peel is added to the whirlpool to deliver a citric bittering that sets HopApeel apart from the masses.

Bottle at BrewMaster’s Craft Beer Festival. Pours a cloudy copper with small off white head that lasts. The aroma is earth, grass, citrus. Medium body, sweet hop, toasted malt, light bitterness, decent.

(bottle, 35.5cl) Hazy, light-amber colour with a short and off-white foamy head. Mildly fruity and piney hoppy aroma with notes of citrus, oranges; hints of bready, slightly oxidized cara-malt in the background. Moderately bitter flavour with a balanced malty sweetness underneath, modest carbonation; rather dry bitter-sweet piney hoppy finish. 20.VI.16

Bottle. Orange color with small white head. Aroma is piney, tangerines, orange peel. Taste is slightly oxidized, piney, bitter finish, carbonation. Bottle was probably a bit too old, close to its BB date. Still ok.

Slightly hazy amber, orange, light brown with little white head. Aroma is pine cone, orange, fresh grassy hops. Taste is bitter hoppyness, with some more bitter sour fruits. A little too bitter for me. But still nice. Long dry finish with also more sourness. Not much carbonation. Not so easy to drink. Overall good.

Bottle. Cloudy amber, low offwhite head. Musty pine and caramel malt. Medium light body, mellow mouthfeel . Dusty Krystal , light oxidized, piney, herbal hops. A bit past its prime I guess.

Crisp amber and copper coloured body with a large, five centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of pale malt, yeast, bread and a bit of hops - no citrus at all yet. Medium-bodied; Assertive nutty and earthy malt up front with some toffee and a very light, layered sweetness of flowers, oranges and caramel, with some grassiness and a bit of metal on the finish. Aftertaste is relatively subdued with some sweetness and earthy malt with toffee and little else - no hop bitterness and only some faint orange flavours. Overall, a decent beer at best, without any hop qualities or citrus notes, this is a bit underwhelming. I sampled this sixteen ounce can purchased from Siciliano’s in Grand Rapids, Michigan on 11-September-2015 for US$1,99 sampled at home in Washington on 06-October-2015.

bottle - This brew has a fairly mild, citrusy, bready aroma. The flavor has some good hops though perhaps not as assertively bitter as many American IPAs. The citrus is there. It’s not as strong as I expected for the hops varietals and added orange peel. I’m not really picking up orange specifically. Fairly good beer overall.
