Atwater’s HopApeel is a frontal assault on the American IPA style that features not only the classic American Cascade and Chinook hops, but two of the new “Super Cascade” varieties in both the kettle and in the dry hop. Dried and ground orange peel is added to the whirlpool to deliver a citric bittering that sets HopApeel apart from the masses.

12oz bottle. Unfiltered thick red-orange body. Steady off-white/bneige head. Not much of an aroma. Big, caramel thick sugary old school American IPA. Not bad, but not really good in any way either. Pretty drab. Crystal malt overload. Very glad I didn’t buy a six pack.

Bottle. Biscuit caramel and orange peel aroma. Golden yellow with small head. Sweet bready caramel malt and moderately bitter metallic orange peel flavor. Okay but rough.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled in 3/2014. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy deep orange copper color with a 2 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big tangerine, grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, pineapple, peach, floral, grass, light pine, caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of juicy citrus hops, orange peel, and moderate malt sweetness; with good strength. Taste of big tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple, peach, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, floral, grass, pine, caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Good amount of pine/citrus rind bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple, peach, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, pine, caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice complexity of citrus hop, orange peel, and moderate malt flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a lightly creamy, smooth, crisp, and fairly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very good citrus spiced IPA. Good complexity and balance of citrus hops, orange peel, and moderate malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to sip on. A nicely enjoyable offering.
