JavaHead is like a day at Tröegs; it’s hard to tell where the coffee ends and the beer begins. This creamy oatmeal stout is infused with locally roasted, cold steeped coffee through our HopBack vessel releasing subtle hints of cocoa, roasted nuts and dark mocha.

Bottle - thanks to secret santa ’09. Very dark brown pour with an ample sized creamy tan head. Lots of thick, sticky lacing. Coffee filled aroma, sweet and with a light cocoa. I can sense a little bittersweetness is about to happen. Flavor profile is up front with a roasted espresso flavor before getting swept up in heavy roast. Light bittersweet chocolate notes. Dry and chalky. Straightforward and enjoyable.

Bottle. Poured a black with a nice thick muddy brown head that lasted throughout. Aroma was full of coffee notes, with plenty of roasted notes and a slight oat undertone. Flavor was well balanced with roast, coffee and a bit of cocoa. I picked up a slight undertone of citrus hops near the middle.

Pours brownie brown with thin tan head. The aroma is sweet malts, some modest roastiness, caramel, black strap molasses, fudge brownie crumbs and a dash of chocolate. The taste is smooth and somewhat thin with burnt malts, a touch of chocolate, some black licorice, coffee and a dash of earthiness to keep things interesting. It actually gets fuller in body toward the finish leaving pretty bold roastiness into the after taste.

Bottle on 10/04/2009. Dark black body with a large rocky tan head. Sweet roast, chocolate, caramel and coffee aroma with a bit of floral and resiny notes. Sweet chocolate, roast and vanilla flavor with coffee and a bit of floral hop bitterness. Medium full body with moderately low carbonation.

@Uno’s Caskfest-pours a rich dark tan head that laces and dark brown with red color. Aroma is pine hops, roasty-dark malt. Taste is coffee/roasty-dark malt, secondary resin hops.

Pours black into a snifter. Mocha head recedes to hug rim. Chocolate and espresso aromas. Thin with vanilla, chocolate and sweet espresso. Lasting coffee finish.

22 ounce bottle from Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a very dark brown color appearing black in the glass. Large brown head shows good head retention and lacing. Aroma of smooth chocolate and coffee along with very faint roast notes and a stronger hoppiness than I would have expected. Taste is coffee, bitter roasted malts, chocolate and a bitter, leafy hoppy finish. Smooth, creamy. Medium-full bodied.

Appearance was nearly black, but let’s some light through. Large bubble head that evaporates quickly to leave moderate lacing. Smell was roasted coffee and milk chocolate. Taste was straightforward and simple coffee and chocolate. Overall, average, common coffee-style stout. Nothing that stands out.

Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark black color with a large dark brown head that lingered forever and produced lots of lacing. The aroma was lovey and complex with bitter roasty malts, coffee, tart cherriess, apples and berries. The flavor was bitter, roasty and toasty with notes of malted milk, vanilla and coffee. There were touches of citrus, apple and caramel underneath. The coffee is definitely present but is subtle. The finish was long, dryish and roasty. The body is full and silky smooth. Excellent.
