Down in Kentucky and across the pond in Scotland, distillers who age their whiskeys for many years refer to the evaporation of the spirits from their barrels as “The Angel’s Share.” We couldn’t agree more. Our Angel’s Share is a barrel aged burgundy colored ale infused with copious amounts of dark caramel malt to emphasize the vanilla and oak flavors found in freshly emptied brandy barrels. Each batch spends no less than 6 months aging in the oak.

27th June 2008. Sumptuous almost creamy dark ale. Lots of lovely brandy fumes and flavours. Woody and vanilla tones. Rich, different and incredibly drinkable.

2007 vintage, an official bad day at work beer. Bottle pours, a murky mahogany with a medium tan head. Very evil looking. Strong and complex aroma of red wine, oak, vanilla, brandy, and green raisins. Wow, nice red grape, raisin, spiced apple, and brandy finish with vanilla and oak notes that are very dry on the tongue like a good red wine. Very nice and suprising. This is like a glass of brandy, a glass of red wine, and a sweet british barley wine all in one. I love it.

bottle, vintage 2008, mit Riesendankeschön an Allen! Deep brown colour, almost black, no head at all. Aroma of caramel, roasetd malts, smoke, dried fruit, prunes.... Very full-bodied, very complex flavours of caramel, chocolate, smoke, dfied beries, prunes, plums, dates... Lingering finish. Very malty with a sweet character, balanced off by the alcohol. Very interesting, fascinating and hard to describe.

2008 small bottle version. Pours ugly black. Soy, dried fruits and slightly sour. Smooth and still. This beer is more odd than interesting.

Bottle. Vintage 2008. Big dissapointment. Lots of things going on, in fact too many... soy, alcohol, liquor chocolates, dried fruits etc. Very vinous! But this beer is just too much of everything without being very complex or tasty.

Bottle. Deep brown pour with nice head. Sweet boozy aroma. Tastes of dark fruit, vanilla, toffee, sweet, strong. Also had this on draught at GBBF 2008. A typical American Belgian style clone. Nice beer but unimaginative really, perfectly drinkable though.

Bottle that Craig brought along to Fin and Craigs pre Cropredy Festival mini tasting at Merton, Oxon 12-08-09 Pours dark brown with not much of a head. Aroma is sweet dark sugars with a strange cheesiness going on also. In fact it really is a touch cheesy feet and rather strange not desperately off-putting as there is dark malts and some oak and whiffs of alcohol as well but not the aroma I was expecting. Tastes better than the aroma is suggesting, warmth from the alcohol is immediately apparent, its sticky, sweet with lots of dark sugars. Some oak, caramel and then the alcohol shows again its fine but the cheesiness and slight concern as to whether this is at its best concern me a little . A4 A3 F6 P3 Ov11 2.7

750 mL bottle shared by LooseCannon at Immy’s Backyard Throwdown. This is from the flat batch. Pours a brownish red color with no sign of carbonation. Aroma is toffee, raisin, earthy notes, spice and brandy. Taste is caramel, spice, spice, chocolate and berries. Full bodied with lots of alcohol warmth.

375ml bottle, 2008 vintage, scored via a few trades. After all the controversy about this beer I was interested and excited to try this. Took the cage off and hoped I would hear a hiss or pop or something from the cork... no such luck. Pours a deep brown, mahogany with zero head. Legs line a scotch. No carbonation period. Sorry Tomme, this ain’t under carbonated, this is flat. Still, I’m willing to give this the benefit of the doubt. The aroms is really nice. The brandy comes through really well, apples, peaches, cookie dough, caramel, candy. Flavor is really great, it tastes like a caramel apple. The sweetness of the malts teams really well with the fruitiness from the brandy barrel. Tons of caramel, some coconut, vanilla, sort of a sour mash thing, slight orange. Slightly oily on the tongue, sweet finish with a gentle warmth provided by the alcohol. Man, I wish this was carbonated because this was really good, but the absence of CO2 really hurts the look, nose, flavor and mouthfeel. Was it worth the $15 for the split? Maybe, maybe not. Would I like to try next years version, hell yes.
