Down in Kentucky and across the pond in Scotland, distillers who age their whiskeys for many years refer to the evaporation of the spirits from their barrels as “The Angel’s Share.” We couldn’t agree more. Our Angel’s Share is a barrel aged burgundy colored ale infused with copious amounts of dark caramel malt to emphasize the vanilla and oak flavors found in freshly emptied brandy barrels. Each batch spends no less than 6 months aging in the oak.

Rerate bottle, vintage 2008, kindly shared by gunnar. Dark brown colour, low head. Very strong aroma with loads of malty sweetness and molasses (too much). Flavour much like the 2009 vintage. Original rating: 12.7 Oz. corked and wired bottle, as The Lost Abbey Angel’s Share, 2009 vintage, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 11.5%. Nearly black colour, low tan head. Strong sweetish fusel aroma bordering on "sickly", strong oaky notes. Moderate carbonation in the glass. Intense sweet and malty flavour with strong notes of oak, dark dried fruits and old sherry, partly balanced by noticeable hops in the finish. Oaky aftertaste.

2009 Bottle at the 2010 March Metro Detroit tasting. Poured a dark cloudy brown that was significantly lighter on the edge with no head. Aroma had notes of sweet grains (a bit burnt), caramel and alcohol. Flavor had a strong alcohol note with an underlying sweet grain and caramel touch. There was no carbonation, but I didn’t think it really hurt the beer.

Tiny coarse head. Opaque black body. Plummy roasty soy sauce aroma with sherry and chocolate notes. Dry-sweet plummy port and chocolate taste with alcoholic vanilla and paper notes. Mid-to-full body. Mild, soft mouthfeel, quite hot from the alcohol. Dry alcoholic vanilla and chocolate taste with port and nuts notes, as well as some wood. Good, but too oxidized and alcoholic. (0.75l bottle shared by kestral. 2008 vintage.)

(Bottle, 2009 vintage, at Pikkulintu) Poured almost black and almost clear with hardly any head. Aroma contained malts, alchohol and cognac. Palate was full bodied, burning and dry with medium carbonation. Flavours were cognac, malts, raisin, sweetness and mild bitterness. Aftertaste was malty, sweet and mildly bitter.

Bottle from Ølbutikken, vintage 2008, 1 year old
It pours a dark brown color, viscous and totally flat. The aroma is an interesting blend of caramel, vanilla, woody sourness, some alcohol. Good body strength, but the mouthfeel is quite spoiled by a strong alcohol presence (maybe the brandy barrel is not a good choice); caramel flavor, sweet, vinous, woody, with a touch of vanilla. In the final, the alcohol trace, although not strong, is disturbing.
Something is appreciated (the vinous character in a Barley Wine), something is less appreciated (the alcohol).
Confused.

2008 bottle:
Pours dark brown with almost no head. Strong aroma of sweet malt, toffee and oak barrels. Flavour is very sweet and has notes of toffee and oak barrels. Way too sweet.
My girlfriend made a really funny face when she tasted it :o).

37,5cl bottle @ HJ Hansen. 2008 Version. Opened with a small pop. Pours dark brown with small bubbles on top. Nose is complex with lots of oak, wood, vanilla and caramel. Palate is surprisingly watery. Low carbonation. Very one sided with heavy oak, vanilla and alcohol and even a slightly tart note. I see other experienced the same thing with this recently. Dammmn - 25 bucks on an infected beer!

Bottle, 2008 vintage. It was an exciting moment when the cork was out of the bottle. Would it smack or would nothing happen? The answer is that nothing happened, the beer was completely non-carbonated. The color was very dark but not completely pitch black. No foam. Not the prettiest of sights. The aroma reminded a little about wine with elements of nougat, oak, caramel and some heat from the alcohol. Interesting and different aroma. First sip was very special, a lot of flavors attacked the palate. Some burnt tones, licorice, vanilla, soy, fruit and a slight acidity was the first things I thought of. Complex, but certainly one might wonder how it would taste carbonated. Now it was a hell of a lot of flavors that did not really hang together. Good yes, but not world class. A strange and fascinating beer in many ways.
