Down in Kentucky and across the pond in Scotland, distillers who age their whiskeys for many years refer to the evaporation of the spirits from their barrels as “The Angel’s Share.” We couldn’t agree more. Our Angel’s Share is a barrel aged burgundy colored ale infused with copious amounts of dark caramel malt to emphasize the vanilla and oak flavors found in freshly emptied brandy barrels. Each batch spends no less than 6 months aging in the oak.

37.5cl bottle @ Sorbon, Bromma. 2008 vintage, huge thanks to Afram! Pitch black, opaque, small off-white to beige head that disappears almost instantly. Smell malts, slightly coffee, lightly roasty, slightly hops, lightly sour, oak, liquor (brandy?). Taste malts, roasted malts, some caramel, a lot of (brandy) barrel-aged, lightly sourish, slight hints of coffee, oak. Very dry texture, sticky on the teeth, full body, medium carbo.

Bottle @ home. 2010 vintage. No pop or carbonation release upon opening. Deep reddish brown appearance with no head. Rich dark grape, thick tannin, leather, fig, plum, caramel, toffee, somewhat boozy, vanilla, oaky aroma. Very low carbonation. Very rich dark grape, plum, raisin, vanilla, sugar caramel, toffee, huge tannin, oak flavor. Huge tannin, thick grape flavor but the carbonation is completely missing and it’s a pity. Quite boozy and overly rich but shows potential. The bourbon version was so much better for me.

Bottle 2008. Dark brown colour with a beige head. Aroma is malt, vanilla, bourbon, oak, caramel, dried fruits. Flavour is sweet, caramel, malt, bourbon oak, sugar, licorice, alcohol, vanilla, dried fruits. Full body. nice beer.

Bottle. Cherry, caramel malt, and bourbon aroma. Chestnut color with no head. Sweet prune malt and light alcohol flavor. Smooth as silk. Excellent.

Bottle 2008. Vinous, chocolate, dark fruit, oaky vanilla aroma. Deep garnet tinted chestnut with no head. Vinous dark fruit, bourbon, vanilla, tannic oak, and alcohol flavor. Full boozy body with a dry finish. Big boozy beer. I’m glad I had several people to share the bottle.

375 mL bottle. First thing to note: there’s a piece of cork floating in the bottle, but the bottle’s cork is still intact? Hmm. Anyway, pours a very dark brown to black with no head. Soy, brown sugar, very ripe raisin and red grape aromas. Flavors of brown sugar, very strong red wine, soy. Takes a bit of time to come together, but it’s pretty good. Wouldn’t mind a bit of carbonation, though.

My 3000th rating. 375ml bottle from Crossroads Beer & Wine, Burlington, MA. Marked "Vintage 2011" on the neck, and stated ABV 12.5%.
A flat black pour, like a strong coffee, with no head and an oily texture; the aroma hits as soon as the cork is popped - rich fruit cake and vintage port wine; the taste is equally impressive - soused raisins, burnt toffee, oaky red wine, and sweet vanilla; the finish is dry and moreish and masks the alcohol very well. More a super-strong English Strong Ale than a Barley Wine in my opinion - but very nice indeed, regardless of the category.

Pours deep brown with a small off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, vanilla, coconut, bourbon, oak and caramel. Taste is medium to heavy sweet and light bitter. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is flat to soft.

Flat bottle, 2009 I think. Dark brown. Tangy fruit nose, dried fruits and grape. Fruity, sour flavor, tangy, plums, vanilla,oak. Enjoyable enough but certainly not what it’s supposed to be.
