Down in Kentucky and across the pond in Scotland, distillers who age their whiskeys for many years refer to the evaporation of the spirits from their barrels as “The Angel’s Share.” We couldn’t agree more. Our Angel’s Share is a barrel aged burgundy colored ale infused with copious amounts of dark caramel malt to emphasize the vanilla and oak flavors found in freshly emptied brandy barrels. Each batch spends no less than 6 months aging in the oak.

2006 bottle shared at 2012 RBWG. Pours a dark brown with small quickly diminishing head. The aroma is oak and vanilla malt. Medium mouthfeel with a vanilla and oak flavor with rich finish. Easy to drink a very impressive barleywine from Lost Abbey.

375ml bottle @ Kaisla, Helsinki
2009 vintage - Pours dark brown, almost black with no head whatsoever. Massive aroma of oak, wood, syrup, caramel malts, peat, vanilla, raisins and dark fruits. Taste is slightly sweet with malty notes and hints of vanilla, oak, wood, peat, raisins and plum. Finish is slick and oily with sweet chocolatey and fruity notes. Full bodied, but alcohol is well hidden. Excellent and tasty barrel aged barley wine.

Keg @ BrewDog Edinburgh 140212 (1/3 pint in snifter)
Dark brown...murky and cloudy...thin head
Aroma - sweet bit buttery toffee....molten dime bar...chocolate caramels...very fruity.....some odd butterscotch...bit of alcohol on the nose...weird complex aroma
Taste as aroma with some brandy notes...wood...bit of sherry...hint of red wine...yeast...some sourness...caramel....very rich (perhaps too rich)...crazy complexity
Palate - big beer here...very viscous...very sweet sherry and brandy. FInish of intense chocolate caramel, melted dime bar, fruity port, well blended but there is a bit of saltiness
Overall - Strange enigmatic complex beer in every aspect. A beer geek’s puzzle. Do I like it? The aroma isn’t that great IMHO but is very complex. The taste is much better and very complex, but I could only the 1/3 pint. It’s gorgeous but very strange tasting. IMHO I’m glad I tried it but I wasn’t madly fond of it even I know it’s a remarkable beer.

Draft at Beer Revolution. Dark brown color, small beige edge head. Aroma of prunes and plums. Taste is similar, and slightly sour. Very nice stuff. Earlier Rating: 4/2/2010 Total Score: 3.912 ounce bottle at American Craft in Boston. Not really a beer, this is a tawny port. Almost black. Completely flat, no lacing. Aroma of sweet cherries, port. Taste is vinuous, dates, prunes, cherries. Interesting, but difficult to make it through the entire bottle.

Sample at Eurostash III tasting on 01/12/2012: 2009 bottle. The beer pours a dark mahogany color with a medium tan head that dissipates quickly to an outer ring. Small patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of dark fruit, caramel malt and chocolate. Rich and smooth body with a nice raisin and date character and notes of chocolate malt, caramel and vanilla. Brandy lends a nice warming boozyness in the background. The finish is sweet caramel and molasses with a lingering oak and dark fruit aftertaste. Very good all around, guess I lucked out!

Clear dark brown with an off-white head. Aroma is very sweet malty, caramel, vanilla and whisky. Flavor is quite sweet, moderate bitter and moderate acidic. Dry, moderate bitter and moderate acidic with warming alcohol. I have no idea which batch this was, but it was clearly infected. Still a good beer though. 161111

Fall 2011 Ratebeer gathering. I have been wanting to try this one for a long time. It was nice but not all that I had hoped. +++ Sampled from a 12.7 oz corked brown bottle this beer poured an incredibly murky dark brown color with a trace of a soapy white head that faded quickly and left minimal lacing. The aroma was dryish vanilla, bourbon, port wine, cocoa and wood. The flavor was sweet caramel and strong bourbon with moderate vanilla, nut, wood and cherry. Nicely complex in flavor. The finish was long with bourbon, caramel and vanilla lingering. Full bodied. Well done.
