Allagash Saison is our interpretation of a classic Belgian farmhouse-style ale. Saisons were once brewed to slake the thirst of farmers returning from a long day of toil; they were spicy, light, and drinkable.
We brew this amber beer with a 2-row barley blend, malted rye, oats, and dark Belgian candi sugar. Northern Brewer, Bravo, and Cascade hops deliver a citrus profile with light bitterness. By fermenting with a traditional saison yeast strain, notes of spice and tropical fruit accent the aroma. Citrus and peppery spice balance its pleasant malt character. This beer is full bodied with a rustic, dry finish. Made for enjoying, no matter which type of work you’re returning from.

Enjoyable beer, better than my score indicates. Pretty dead-on within the saison comfort zone, hitting all the right farmhouse notes--grassy meadow malts, subtle sweetness, clove with hints of citrus and vanilla, yeasty backbone--without any drastic stylistic departures to make it a standout. But that's okay; sometimes it's good to make a really basic, readily identifiable, unmistakably well-done version of a classic style. Too bad it's not a looker; comes out a pretty straw yellow, but lacks head or lace. Nose is underwhelming as well, faint wheat and yeast with the slightest hint of funk. Good boisterous saison texture, though, and grows increasingly drinkable as it warms. Not bad.

355ml bottle. Milky, yellow-ish, pale golden colour with small, to average, frothy, half-way lasting, moderately lacing, white head. Rather clean, floral and fruity aroma, notes of chamomile, daisy, pollen, honey, peach, nectarine, a touch of peppercress, Taste is dry, tart-ish, mildly citrusy hoppy, floral, fruity and peppery yeasty spicy, slightly bready malty basis, hints of chamomlie, daisy, honey, brine, mustard seed, unripe peach, a touch of peppercress, subtle, minimally sugary sweetness; peppery spicy finish. Rich and manifold, well balanced, thereby somewhat reticent and almost a bit watery.

Bottle poured into pint glass. Aroma is yeasty cheese and basement with muted fruity esters. Appearance is hazy light yellow with insignificant head, nice sparkle, and trace lacing. Taste is medium sour with only light sweet and bitter balance. Palate is light bodied with thin texture and fizzy carbonation, dry, bitter/sour finish. Overall, kind of a Kolsch-y saison. Not digging the sourness and bitterness of this. Like other Allagash offerings way more than this.
