Cask at Bird in Hand, Stafford. Pours a dark mahogany with a medium cream / tan head. Roast malts and caramel in the aroma plus hints of chocolate. Liquorice is the most prominent flavour in the mouth, together with malts and parkin. There’s a distinct smokiness to the whole caboodle as well. Later on there are traces of dark fruits and the finish is quite bitter. This is quite nice.

Cask at the Craven Arms, Birmingham. Poured almost black in colour with a mostly lasting frothy off-white head. The aroma is roasty malt, light caramel. The flavour is moderate to light liqourice bitter, with a smooth, light, roasty, yeasty, light caramel, smoky, liqourice bitter palate. Medium to light bodied with soft carbonation.
