Very full bodied, rich and sweet with a higher bitterness to provide balance. Bursting with malty, biscuity and fruit cake character from the mixture of pale, amber and crystal malts. Masses of tropical fruits and floral fragrance from the hops, in particular the fragrant, floral and spicy Fuggles used as late hop together with extra Challenger, Pilgrim and First Gold. Very complex, rich and warming.
MALT: Pale, crystal, amber.
HOPS: Challenger, First Gold, Fuggles

0.5 l bottle from 'trinkgut Knödgen', best before November 2020. Clear, dark reddish amber with a medium large, foamy, stable, light beige head. Sweetish, gently fruity, slightly herbal-grassy aroma of marmelade, raisins and some caramel. Gently sweet, malty, moderately bitter, slightly fruity and a bit herbal-grassy taste of caramel, marmelade, some raisins and a touch of tea leaves, followed by a short, gently bitter, moderately herbal-grassy, slightly dry and a little metallic finish. Medium body, gently effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Solid Strong Ale, doesn't hide its industrial origin.

Bottle: Clear, copper coloured, small and persistent english head, moderate bitter-sweet nose of fruity malt, some peppery hops in the background; moderate and balanced bitter-sweet flavour, surely medium bodied; lingering dryish ,mainly malty, bitter-sweet finish with some hoppy spots and an illusion of warming all in the aftertaste. Reliable english quality, even though not really convincing when compared with some Fuller's brews...

Bottle at home. Good pour with a rich aroma. The taste was dominated by caramel, to the extent I was looking for ingredients to see if it had been included. It's ok, but not a patch on Old Crafty Hen which is the benchmark mass market old ale.
