(Cask at Royal Oak, Borough, London, 18 May 2011) Dark brown colour with frothy, beige head. Malty nose with dried fruit, chocolate, raisins, wort and dark rye bread. Malty, slightly fruity taste with notes of caramel, dark bread, raisins, prunes and a slightly spicy bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with balanced sweetness. Nice one.

A reddish brown ale with a thin light moka head. In aroma, a smooth buttercotch malt with nice treacle, lightly vinous, like a barley wine. In mouth, a nice sweet treacle malt, oily mouthfeel, roasted nies, a bit vinous. On cask at Redlight Redlight, Jan. 6 2011.

Cask proper nonic pint pour at the Diamond in Brooklyn. Pour is a hazed brown with a loose light tan head. Aroma is soft chocolate malt, along with some fruit sweetness. Taste is mildly sour bright bitter green apple, along with the chestnut and the chocolate malt. Palate is medium to thin bodied, with a soft cask carbonation. Quite drinkable, nice.

Cask-conditioned at the Royal Oak, Borough 4/02/10. Deep brown in colour with a slight, tan head. Sweetish without becoming cloying, with hints of treacle, chocolate, nuts and oak, before a soft finish. Excellent [3.8]. Bottle from a deli in Petersfield, Hants. Similar appearance to the cask version with slight carbonation. Rich and nutty aroma with some soft dark fruit and caramel. Sweet flavour, with dried fruits and a touch of spice, before a slightly roasty, dry finish. Very good [3.6]

Bottled. Rubyish amber/brown colour with mediumsized off-white fluffy head. Aroma is wooden, mild dark dry fruits along with caramel malt. Some mild bready notes as well as nuttyness. Flavour is quite much the same in a nice balance. Has a bit sourish notes all the way through as well. A rather nice brown ale indeed.

Sweet hazelnut, malty brew, that was a bit too sweet for my liking. Still nuttiness and chocolate flavors played out well in the mouth. Lingering sweet, rich chocolately finish.
