Cask at Lord Nelson, Brighton. It pours very dark brown with a small beige head. The nose is caramel, plum, raisin, treacle and cola. The taste is smooth, mellow roast, caramel, liquorice, wood, raisin, cola and date with a dry, earthy finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Pretty impressed with this Harvey offering. Tasty, very well balanced and rather drinkable.

Bottle from Harvey’s online. Appearance - deep brown with a lovely red chink at the bottom. A shame the head is thin otherwise it would’ve been a 5 for appearance. Nose - dark sugar and subtle red fruit. Taste - loads of red fruits. Redcurrants and cherry with dark sugars. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy yet tangy texture and a long d Overall - it’s not a typical brown ale. But it’s interesting.

a) Bottle, pasteurised: Rating from 2011: Für ein englisches Bier starke Schaumbildung mit meiner schönen dunkelbeigen Schaumkrone. --> 12,12,13,13,12,13 - 12,70

b) Cask @ GBBF 2014, unpasteurised. The beer starts smooth and nice malty. Fresh with hints of nuts and a nice malty fruitiness Very smooth. Malty, fruity, hints of nuts in the mainpart, very intense with roasted hints. Nice and smooth till the end, deep with a nice dryer malty body.
Great brew! Nice balance between nuts and caramel, roasted malt and malty sweetness. 12/12/13/12

50cl bottle picked up in Hastings. Deep reddish chestnut with a beige head; aroma of treacle toffee; the flavour is nutty and earthy with a toffee sweetness and a rather thin body; then a light bitterness leaving a vinous finish with a touch of chocolate for good measure. Very easy drinking!
