Manannan Mac Lir. "Son of the Sea" and the mystic Celtic warrior god after whom the Isle of Man is named. It was only time then, before we at least honoured him with a decent beer. We think he would be proud. MacLir, clouds and clears on pouring much like the legendary cloak of mist, with which Manannan is said to have protected the Island from invasion…and sub-standard beer.

MacLir is a superb Wheat Beer, with resin hops and lemon fruit on the aroma, banana and lemon in the mouth, and a big, bitter finish dominated by the hops, juicy malt and citrus fruit. Unlike lightly hopped Bavarian or Belgian wheat beers, MacLir also comes armed with a veritable oast house full of little green plants.

Ingredients: Pride of Ringwood from New Zealand, Cascade and Cluster from the US, Saaz from the Czech Republic, Styrian Goldings from Slovenia, and First Gold and Goldings from England.

Clear gold with huge, off-white head, very finely lacing. VERY nice nose with hops, lunaria , kafir leaf, wheat and grain sheaf, hay. Again a very fresh, hoppy (my guess are the NZL hops...); just bitter main taste, perfumey, and a soft, mineral water with sweetness and some salt. Light bodied, but nowhere empty - mineral water quality. Definitely one of the BEST wheatbeers I’ve ever tasted.

[Cask at Stockholm Beer Festival] Clear golden. Concentrated hay aroma. Soft and medium bodied. Malt is there to support and lay a soft foundation, but hops make up most of the flavour - hay is dominant. Medium bitterness.

(Bottle 50 cl) Beautiful, clear amber with an off-white head. Lightly tart, malty nose. Medium-bodied, some nuts and caramel with a rather dry and hoppy finish. A wheat beer, but not that different from a straightforward Bitter. Thanks to tbone_ for this 010506 and 210908

Cask at Head of Steam, Euston, London Citrusy blondish/gold beer. Not very nice and I only had a half which I was glad about. Okells can be a bit up and down in my experience

Clear copper brown, rocky white head, lace. Flowery hops, herbs, lemon in the aroma. Trefoil, flowery hoppy flavor. Wheat rounds the corners but otherwise quite ordinary British bitter. Medium-bodied. Bitter aftertaste.

Bottled. Bright golden. Grapefruity aroma. Sweet with clean, rounded mouthfeel. Generously hoppy, some vanilla and wheat malt character. Grassy bitter finish with a hint of soap.
