Doomed by a love of pitch-black Porters and our Allagash House Beer, we summoned the recipe for Haunted House. Roasted Barley and Blackprinz malt curse this beer with a gravely dark hue. Hopped with Tettnang, Chinook, and Saaz hops, this beer ends with a ghost of coffee-flavored bitterness and hauntingly complex malty palate.
Grains: Allagash 2-Row Malted Barley Blend, Victory, Carapils, Raw Wheat, Roasted Barley, Blackprinz
Hops: Nugget, Cascade, Northern Brewer
Yeast: House

Reviewed from notes.
Can to tulip.
Appearance: dark brown close to black in the glass with a two and a half fingers of khaki foamy head which settled down to leave some messy lace
Aroma: some smoky to dark chocolatey notes, light roasty scents; light ashy notes, toasted nuts, some earthy to semi-citrusy hops
Flavor: combines the prior noted aromas to a fine roasty to sweet sort of mentality while finishing semi-roasty and slightly earthy hopped
Texture: medium bodied, leaning towards being a sipper; light smoothness and substantial dryness; light hop bitterness
Overall: though not really a Belgian ale to me, and somewhat not really a "black IPA" which was my second thought on this - it ends up leaving me scratching my beard a bit as to what this beer wants to be. I guess the best way to go about this is "dark ale" and leave it at that. I "think" I could come back to this.

Can from vintage 2$. Pour is really dark, like root beer with a nice foamy off white head. Civilized malty nose. Oh, first big swig tho, is not civilized. Its a bitter pointed sharpness with some smoky flavors on top of a rude somewhat terebinth extract flavor, whew. Big Pistacia terebinthus! Medicinal fer sher. Pretty nasty there, allagash. I think they made a mistake when brewing some experimental recipe and they had so much, they couldn't ditch it; so they just canned it and made up a name to sell it to the ticker whores. This brew is an accessory and ancillary appurtenant, controlled depending on the incidental counting, to ticking on brewver. There, you have it. I'm totally blown away by the uncultured, uncultivated, benighted and unsophisticated nature of this brew; especially since its classified as a belgian. Its an insult to the the Belgians. Dark american IPA? Maybe. I just wish it had more alky content to help me forget about the negativity of this session.

Review based on the BJCP2021 guidelines (style 21B - Black IPA adapted). Can 35.5 cl - Batch 13:42 9044 (BB: undeclared - Packaged on 08/18/25). AROMA: medium roasted malt notes (dark chocolate, roasty), slight nuttiness and a low minty hop background. APPEARANCE: very dark amber color and clear. medium light brown head, creamy, with good retention. TASTE: medium-high roasted flavor (dark chocolate, roasty) that evolves into full-on roasted, almost burnt/charcoal. medium-high bitterness with a semi-dry to dry finish with burnt notes. MOUTHFEEL: medium body with medium carbonation. OVERALL: a hoppy dark ale with a very pronounced roasted character and where the hop presence is starting to fade due to age.

From Beer Drop, canned July 16th 2025.
Pours black, 2 finger head of foam(vigorous pour), retention is excellent, lacing is good.
Roasted malt and chocolate aromas, with some coffee.
Taste is roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate, quite on the more bitter side. Bitterness comes from hops, coffee and chocolate. Pretty intense.
Medium bodied with a good level of carbonation, I would drink this again.
