Sierra Nevada Torpedo Ale is a big American IPA; bold, assertive and full of flavor and aromas highlighting the complex citrus, pine and herbal character of whole-cone American hops. Our obsession with harnessing huge hop flavor led to the development of what we call the hop torpedo, a revolutionary method of dry-hopping designed, built, and debuted here at the brewery. Our torpedo is a sleek, stainless-steel piece of hardware that delivers more pure hop aroma than any method of dry-hopping we’ve ever seen.

710ml bottle. Pours a slightly hazy red-orange with a large, frothy, long lasting, off-white head that leaves curtains of lace. Sweet aroma of caramel malt, grapefruit and pine. Sweet flavour of caramel malt, grapefruit, orange, pine needles and grass with a dry, bitter, hoppy finish. Medium body with an oily texture and soft carbonation. Tasty.

It started as a napkin sketch in a pub, an idea for a device that could boost hop aroma without adding more bitterness. We built the sketch, and the “Hop Torpedo” revolutionized dry hopping and inspired Torpedo, one of our favorite IPA style beers. It’s an aggressive yet balanced beer featuring the complex citrus, pine, and herbal character of whole-cone hops.

Bought locally for just over $9 a sixpack including tax.
This pours a very bright clear gold colour with about an inch of foam.
The smell is very hoppy with pine and citrus being well represented. Heck, I even get a decent caramel malt presence after more sniffing. I'm hoping that the malt is more assertive in the taste than the smell as I'm just in the mod for a balanced IPA.
The taste has big hop flavours up front with lots of citrus and grass, pine as well though more noticeable to me in the smell, and...yep...sandwiched in between I can defintely taste a good malt backbone that culminates about mid palate and just before the finish. The finish itself is hop dominated but there's still a smidgeon of malt there and it cuts into the bitterness nicely.
It has a medium mouthfeel and the carbonation is also medium but just saying that doesn't put it in proper perspective. Let me just say for the category, it's excellent.
Drinkability? Very tasty, unintrusive alcohol, nice mouthfeel, easy drinking...I think this is a terrific IPA that begged over and over for another sip. Sierra Nevada hit another home run with this one!

Sötét borostyán szín, nagy, nagyon tartós hab. Ipás illatfelhő, narancsos, mandarinos jegyekkel. Édeskés, trópusi gyümölcsös, lágy ipa, visszafogott gyantával, de határozott keserűvel. Jó összhang jellemzi. Utóíze a korty folytatása, a keserűje nagyon sokáig megmarad. Testes, de nem nehéz, jól iható.

Poured into a SA Perfect Pint showing dark copper with a finger of clean white foam. The nose shows light sweet caramel malts, not much hop influence. The palate shows well carbonated but smooth and full bodied. Very tea like with flavors of sweet ice tea and a slightly astringent tea like finish. Mostly malts but easy to go down.

Bottle @home, on Christmas Eve. Pours clear amber with thick, creamy, lasting off-white head, medium body, oily texture. Very good lacing. Citrus, orange, grapefruit, pine on the nose. Caramel and bread malts, heavy hop presence. Strong bitter dry finish with hints of malty sweetness. Very refreshing, tasty and drinkable. Interesting IPA.
