This brawny, tawny ale is a savory celebration of spicy rye malt and rye whiskey, compliments of extended aging in freshly-emptied rye barrels. Rye on Rye pours a deep amber and evokes notes of charred oak and vanilla, with a finish this delightfully boozy and sweet!

Bottle thanks to drfabulous. Pours a very dark amber, almost reddish. Nose and taste of rye, caramel malts and whiskey barrel. Very smooth and tasty with slight whiskey aftertaste. I also detect some subtle grape and vinous notes.

Courtesy of askofficerfriendly. Pours hazy brown with copper hues and tall tan head. The aroma is sweet with malts and growing spiciness and crystal like malts. The taste is sweet and then seems to roll into a bourbon or whiskey booze sensation followed by drying booziness (go figure) and growing rye spiciness. It seems a bit bright and rough and likely some time in the cellar may improve things.

Bottle from Bottleworks. Pours clear copper with a foamy 5-finger beige head. Aroma of sweet, rough roast malt. Medium body with foamy carbonation. The flavor is tremendous. The rye is clearly recongnizable, and there’s that smooth whiskey barrel aspect. With oak. Some slightly sour and funky aroma develops, and there’s an almost chocolate tinge to the finish. It’s extremely delicious. There was transient heat. It just gets better and better.

Pours a lovely golden-orange with nice, thick, creamy head. Some sweetness (a little too much?), along with fruity notes (raisin, spice, clove) and whisky bitterness. Truly an interesting experiment and worth a try, but just really not to my taste (the sweetness turns me off).
