This brawny, tawny ale is a savory celebration of spicy rye malt and rye whiskey, compliments of extended aging in freshly-emptied rye barrels. Rye on Rye pours a deep amber and evokes notes of charred oak and vanilla, with a finish this delightfully boozy and sweet!

Corked bottle from QFC, Capitol Hill, Seattle; vintage 2014
Hazy amber color with compact head. Intense aroma from the barrel, Bourbon like; but then it gets replaced by some soap feeling, vegetables, tomatoes. Smooth mouthfeel, full bodied; straws and malt flavor, some barrel, light peppery/spicy touch, some vegetables, high alcohol perception.
At first it has a great nose, but then it goes downhill. It’s chaotic, and excessive.

Bottle. Pours a clear amber with a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a nice rye note with a good amount of booze, some sweet grains and just a touch caramel and citrus rind. Flavor has a nice sweet grain and whiskey note with some rye and just a touch of bitter citrus.

Bottle. A- Rye, roses, malty, alcohol. A- Dark red amber color, hazy dark liquid, off white head. T- Strong rye tones, slightly sweet, subtle caramel, apricots, whiskey. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, sharp finish. O- This was a darn good beer. Boulevard has done it again with their smokestack series. The Rye on Rye almost reminded me of liquid rye bread. The rye is very prominent and I also detected subtle hints of fruits like apricots and some caramel. The warmer it got the more the whiskey flavors came out. I imagine this would go perfect with a Rueben. I could sip on this all day!

I have had this beer a good deal of times since it came out. I had never rated it before but I am trying to climb up the top Blvd raters list nowadays (this will put my in the top 5, woooo! Screw you Pete!). its a good thing because I think that the 2014 version is the best I have had so far. This was on tap at Merchant’s in Lawrence, KS. Served in a snifter. Color is dark amber, thick looking with good clarity. generally, its strong (malt, alcohol) but not overly sweet and only a moderate barrel character. So, for a barrel aged 12% barleywine its well done. Alcohol is present. Flavor very well attenated and no boozy but the alcohol is definitely there.

750 mL bottle from Secret Santa. Thanks! Figured I’d open this one right away as the cold weather was murder on the labels and this bottle ended up completely nude! Pours a hazy rust color with a large foamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of rye, wood, caramel, mild whiskey. The taste is rye, earth, citrus, berries, mild whiskey, wood and vanilla. Medium bodied, strong alcohol warmth, smooth and mellow, good balance, low carbonation, Nice beer.
