Horndean Special Bitter (HSB) was first brewed in 1959 to meet a growing demand for a higher strength bitter. Sales growth was slow throughout the sixties when BBB and the cask milds were the predominant Gales beers. However, following the creation of CAMRA and the greater public interest in cask conditioned beer, HSB sales grew throughout the seventies and eighties and became Gales major brand. Production moved to Fullers in early 2006.

50cl bottle from Bierzwerg, BBE 10/2011. Poured dark/red copper with a creamy, white nicely lacing head. Aroma has biscuits, fruit and some grainy notes. Flavor is biscuits, toffee, caramel and grain. Lovely smooth, fruity finish. Wow! Made my day.

Cask, Fuller’s brewery. Amber-brown, caramelly and slightly smoky nose. Sweetish, light caramel with subtle fruitiness, and a hint of crackers.
Bottle, from Fisherman’s Pub in Paphos, Cyprus. Golden-amber. Toasty with light caramel and earthy notes. Fairly straightforward palate, tastes a bit Fuller’s these days. Score is amalgamated.

Cask at the Wharf. Amber colour with a beige head. Flavour is fruit, roasted malt, alcohol, apple, hop. Bitter finish,. OK beer.

Bottled 500ml. - from the London Pride store in Ljubljana, shared with Marko.
Dark amber coloured, medium sized off-white head, sweetish malty nose. Slight roasted malt, weak fruity and caramel with mild buttery notes. Mild bitter finish. Nothing more nothing less than drinkable.

Cask at The Wharf. It’s a clear, copper-colored beer with a layer of off-white bubbles. Biscuity, light roasted aroma with a touch of citrusy hops. It is dry and lightly roasted in the mouth, with flavors of citrusy hops. Medium body. Lasting roasted finish with a fruity touch. A quite nice and tasteful one. 110320

Bottle from the London Pride store in Ljubljana, shared with ogivlado. Poured a dark amber-brown body with a slightly off white head, that was big and went away at a medium pace. Dry dogfood malty nose, a bit sweaty, blah. The taste was better though, malt dominated soft and caramelly, vaguely fruity and creamy, dry yet creamy. In the end, it didn’t impress me, but one could do much worse.

Bottle. Reddish amber. Appears still beneath a cm of beige head. Floral and butterscotch aroma with hazelnuts. Slightly carbonated mouthfeel. Rich buttery caramel with raisins and some nuts. Firm finishing bitterness along with fruit and nuts. Not very lively, but quite tasty.

(bottle) Clear, amber colour with a medium-sized tanned foamy head. Slightly toasted malty aroma with notes of nettles, mildly fruity hops and a whiff of cacao. Slightly sweet and bitter flavour, light to medium bodied with a moderate carbonation. Delicately toasty malt-character with notes of caramel and a fruity and spicy hoppy touch; moderately dry, bitter-sweet slightly toasty and mildly fruity and subtle fruity hoppy finish with notes of chocolate/cacao in the aftertaste. Cask. Pours an almost clear amber golden with an off-white head leaving some lacework. The nose has a little roasted malt and caramel. Light body, low carbonation, a little sweet burned caramel with a subdued bitterness. 131110
