Horndean Special Bitter (HSB) was first brewed in 1959 to meet a growing demand for a higher strength bitter. Sales growth was slow throughout the sixties when BBB and the cask milds were the predominant Gales beers. However, following the creation of CAMRA and the greater public interest in cask conditioned beer, HSB sales grew throughout the seventies and eighties and became Gales major brand. Production moved to Fullers in early 2006.

En ESB med egen karaktär. Lite mörkare med tydlig brödkaraktär, tänk vört. Samtidigt en markerad och komplex beska. Druck på Fullers pub i Portsmouth.

cask at charlies. Drk clear red ambwr, smooth light brown offwhiteish head 3 faint spicy faint dark fruits, faint sweet note. 6 flavor is sweet and flowery faint cellary note. More fruity than bitter, but in a good way some hops but they never really stand out 6

BOttle: Ruby amber coloured, firm rocky off-white head; average malty-fruity nose with a hoppy tinge and a light cellary touch; moderate bitter-sweet flavour, light to medium bodied; fruity-sweetish finish with a hoppy touch. Quite O.K., but far from being great......

(Cask at Kittys, Helsinki) Poured deep amber and clear with long lasting, white and medium sized head. Flavour contained malts and molasses. Palate was medium bodied with low carbonation. Flavours were malts, molasses, lightly roastedness, bitterness and hint of chocolate. Aftertaste was malty.

Cask @ The Bull And Bear Inn, Stockholm:
Pours copper with a mid sized, creamy head. Caramel and toffee aroma. Flavour is somewhat roasty caramel. Grassy bitterness in the finish.

500ml bottle–pours a rich/foamy off white head and dark copper color. Aroma is medium malt-toffee with some sweet, some wood, peach, citrus. Nice gentle malt nose. Taste follows aroma. Soft carbonation. A good beer (3.7) but a spectacular example of the style (4.4 to style) Thanks to Joe-jwc215 for bring this back from his trip across the pond. 3.7

(Cask at Doric Arch, Euston, London, 16 Apr 2009) Dark nut brown colour with foamy, beige head. Malty, nutty nose with notes of dried fruit, slightly roasted. Malty, nutty taste with dried fruit, fruitcake, gingerbread cake and earthy hops in a bittersweet finish. Medium body, smooth mouthfeel. A nice, malty and nutty bitter.

[Cask at the Plough Inn, Wingfield, Bedfordshire, 22/2/2009] Pours deep red-brown with moderate creamy head. Very faint carbonation. Aroma pleasant but weak. Initially sweet taste of raspberries mixed with toffee; a slightly smokey roasted malt comes through afterwards leading to a well-balanced bitterness in the finish. A bit of oakiness is hiding in there too. This is a top notch bitter that is surprisingly complex and unusual but very smooth and drinkable. Good stuff. [Re-rate, cask at Le De Spencers Arms, Downley Common, High Wycombe] Had the sweet rich malt that I remembered and loved, but let down by a metallic-mineral finish. Not sure it was in the best condition.

Cask (handpump) @ Charlie’s Bar, Pilestræde 33, Copenhagen, Denmark.Clear medium red brown color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, roasted, cellar, damp stained. Flavor is moderate sweet and moderate to light heavy bitter with a average to long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to flat. (050908)

Cask at EBF 2008, on Saturday September 13Clear copper color, small white head. Butterscotch and malty sweet scent. Butterscotch and malt taste. Medium mouthfeel, medium bitterness.
