Belgian Style - Quadrupel / Dark Strong Winter Out of Production
Score
7.29
ABV: 10.0% IBU: - Ticks: 53
Brewed in the authentic style of Belgian winter, or noel beer, is dark, strong, malty and assertively spiced. It is not a lightweight beer, and is best sipped before a roaring fire, or on a sleigh ride over the hills to Grandma’s house. (Let someone else drive.) It would also be a tasty accompaniment to dark roasts and wild game. Even with its strong ABV, this beer is well-balanced and not at all hot or fiery. The dark malts give it lush, malty flavors and aromas, strongly complemented by the five spices, including coriander, cumin, mace, cardamom and grains of paradise. Hopping is modest, as befits such a beer.

On draught at Winking Lizard. Pours a cloudy copper-brown color with a medium off-white head that diminishes steadily. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of malt, fruit and spices. Full-bodied with flavors of earthy yeast, coriander and citrus. The finish is malty with a spicy yeast and banana aftertaste. Above average overall.

Bottle. Pours a cloudy amber with a tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a nice sweet citrus note with a decent amount of spice, some light fruits and a sweet grain backbone. Flavor has a bit less citrus but still the light fruit note with some sweet grains, a good amount of spice and a hint of earthiness.

Rich deep dark brown coloured body with a muddy glow and a thick, three centimetre tall light brown head. Aroma of bananas, yeast, bubble gum, rich malt, alcohol and some light pit fruits. Full-bodied; Strong rich malt flavour with earth and nuts right behind, all with a pungent complex belgian yeast flavour and a rich bubble gum and banana flavour that dominates. Aftertaste shows a subdued rich character with some light chocolate, a hint of pit fruits and apples and a lot of banana and yeast characteristics - but in a pleasant and balanced way. Overall, a nicely laced beer with a good complexity and a variety of flavours that show well. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Liqour Outlet in Boonton, New Jersey on 30-November-2013 for US$2.69 sampled at home in New Paltz, New York on 18-January-2014.

12 ounce bottle into signature tulip glass, bottled on 8/30/2013. Pours moderately cloudy reddish copper color with a 2-3 finger fairly dense and rocky light khaki head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of big plum, pear, raisin, apple, orange peel, caramel, toast, coriander, clove, pepper, candi sugar, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good complexity and balance of yeast, malt, and spice notes; with good strength. Taste of huge raisin, plum, pear, apple, orange peel, caramel, molasses, toast, coriander, clove, pepper, licorice, brown bread, candi sugar, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of raisin, plum, pear, apple, orange peel, caramel, molasses, toast, coriander, clove, licorice, brown bread, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity and balance of robust malt, fruity/spicy yeast, and spice flavors; with a great malt/spice balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a moderately slick, crisp, and lightly syrupy mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent spiced Belgian strong ale! All around awesome complexity, balance, and robustness of malt, yeast, and spice flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bottle: Pours super-foamy, whipped tan over cloudy amber. Aroma is banana cream, yeast.... Taste is old banana, spice...nutmeg....pecans, walnut....malty. Very soft and gentle feel. The warmer it gets, the more flavourful. Absolutely wonderful.
