Sour Ale Aged in Oak Barrels
In January of 2009, a homebrewer and microbiologist named Al Buck won our Batch #50 homebrew contest with his incredibly complex gueuze-style ale. We knew this beer wouldn’t be easy to re-create, but the perfect layers of classic barnyard funk and lactic sourness were impossible to resist. Nearly 3 years later, after brewing the beer once in 2009 and a second batch in 2010, after adding various strains of wild yeasts and bacteria to the barrels and the bottles, after blending multiple batches back together and well beyond our release of Batch #300, we’re finally prepared to release Batch #50 – Grand Funk Aleroad. Brewed in the classic Belgian Gueuze tradition of barrel aging and blending multiple vintages of lambic-style ale, Batch #50 is one of the most rewarding beers we’ve ever had the opportunity to brew.

Bottle @ fonefan tasting. No head. Color is golden. Aroma and taste are acetone, brett, malt, vinegar and hops. Nice.

750mL bottle, sent from xscottypx (thanks a lot, Scott), pours a hazy golden with a small white head. Aroma brings out loads of barnyard funk, some lemon and a little vinegar. Flavour is actually pretty nice, with notes of lemon, light-to-medium funk quality, some acetic notes, and almost a bit of banana. Surprisingly nice for a fake “gueuze”, but very tasty for an American sour. Well-balanced, with soft carbonation on the palate. Low-to-medium acidity with low funk on the finish. Definitely exceeded my expectations. Great stuff.

A lightly hazed golden gueuze with a thin white head. In aroma, a nice corky mix of grapes, Brett and wood barrel. In mouth, a nice sweet yet puckering gueuze with smooth ground cherries, acetic acid, smooth. Shared with GRM, Pushkinwow, and Ian, March 8 2013.

750ml from Levi’s unstoppable sour stash. Hazy bright orange. Sour, but mellow, restrained, which is nice for a Bruery beer. Lemon, creamy malt. Very lactic, hyper easy..maybe end of the bottle feel. Either way, this is a reall nice beer.

Bottled. A hazy amber beer with with a beige head. The aroma has notes of fruits, malt, and straw. The flavor is sweet and acidic with notes of lemons, brettanomyces, alcohol, and straw, leading to a dry and tart finish.

Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of thagr81_us. Pours an almost clear golden with no head. Tart, Bretty, funky nose. Light body, rotten fruit, quite some funk and Brett, yet with an underlying sweetness. Quite a complex and pleasant Sour. 270812
