Sour Ale Aged in Oak Barrels
In January of 2009, a homebrewer and microbiologist named Al Buck won our Batch #50 homebrew contest with his incredibly complex gueuze-style ale. We knew this beer wouldn’t be easy to re-create, but the perfect layers of classic barnyard funk and lactic sourness were impossible to resist. Nearly 3 years later, after brewing the beer once in 2009 and a second batch in 2010, after adding various strains of wild yeasts and bacteria to the barrels and the bottles, after blending multiple batches back together and well beyond our release of Batch #300, we’re finally prepared to release Batch #50 – Grand Funk Aleroad. Brewed in the classic Belgian Gueuze tradition of barrel aging and blending multiple vintages of lambic-style ale, Batch #50 is one of the most rewarding beers we’ve ever had the opportunity to brew.

Pours a crystal clear deep golden color with a miniscule head that dissipates almost instantly. Smells of tart citrus, lemons and oranges with a bit of funk. Taste is citric tart up front with lots of lemons and green apples. A bit of oak tannin and vanilla pop in for a second then, there’s a nice candy sweetness that does a great job balancing the tart. Sweet and sour linger on the palette long after each sip. Medium body with moderate level of carbonation and a sugary tart mouthfeel. That is a nice sour beer, it could use a few more bubbles but damn that’s tasty.

Cool 750 ml bottle thanks to Dallas. Pours a hazy orange color with a medium white head. A very nice potent nose of sour hay. A rich sour ale with oak, sweet fruit, tart apples, very mellow and super drinkable as are some sours. Light funkiness. Very good.

Sample at Eurostash III tasting on 01/12/2012: Bottle from Bruery Provisions. Pours a slightly cloudy yellow-gold color with a medium white head that evaporates steadily. Spotty lacing on the glass. Funky, lemony nose with some oak in the background. Medium body with a tart fruity character and notes of brett, cherries, yeast and wood. The finish is citrus and cherries with a lingering funky aftertaste. Pretty enjoyable all around.

Capped 750 from Beverages 4 Less in Santee, CA. (buy some beer from Fred) Pours brassy gold with little head. Aromas of brett and oak. Med body. Flavor is oaky, barnyard, farmyard, bretty fruity sour. Finishes that way. Excellent.

Bottle. Amber beer with an off-white head. Tart/light acetic aroma with light fruit. White grape and light lemon flavor with green apple and light tartness. Mediumb odied. Light tartness and earth lingers with frutiiness.

Bottle shared with the Kernel crew at the brewery. Hazy orange beer, short lived white head. Crispy dry palate. Grapey lemon and lime fruitiness with a subtle touch of vanilla oak rounding things off. There is a nice champagne like feel to this beer. Sour enough with getting silly. Semi dry finish. Nice.

On tap at the Pro-Am table at GABF (looking forward to the bottles). Pours with a hazy golden body with a minimal white head. Aromas are deep and complex with a rich funk, light vinous/wine notes, floral, vanillin, spicy, brett, honey suckle and orange blossom. Light leather, and deep lactic notes. Flavors are quite tart, acidic, sour, acetic, lots of funk, wet leaves, wood, vanillin, ripe grapes, a touch grainy and stone fruit. Medium to light carbonation. Complex and floral. Quite good!
