This distinctive type of beer was originally brewed to withstand the abuses of shipping in foul weather to Imperial Russia. It was a favourite of Russian nobility whose taste for the finest food and drink was world famous. A rich flavourful brew; deep chocolate in colour with a roasted barley nose and flavour that is a complexity of malt, hops, alcohol and yeast. Fermented in ‘stone Yorkshire squares’.

Bottle online from Beersniffers. Pours pitch black with a medium sized creamy beige head. Aromas of roasty notes, coffee, chocolate and ash. Taste has more of the coffee, chocolate and ashy notes with some added liquorice. Full body with a smooth oily mouthfeel. Slightly bitter ashy finish. Nice old fashioned flavours.

Dark beer, thin beige head though it soon dissipates. Toasty malt aroma. Malt in the flavour, a little chocolate, liquorice. Toasty finish, a little boozy warmth.
