THE Eclipse Tasting. Bottle 1548/2011. Hazy dark brown beer, big pale tan head. Light smooth palate. Airy. Dark fruits. Lactose malt. The bourbon is fairly mellow but sharper on the trailing edge. A little spice. The weakest of these beers - but it’s not a big gap by any means.

Bottle at THE Eclipse Tasting, London. Bottle #1548, purple wax. Cheers to Kenny for supplying. Pours clear, dark brown iwht a frothy, bubbly beige cream head. Big dark bread nose, some dark chocolate, subtle ripe fruits. Big sweet flavor with rich, dark chocolate, some dark berries, good roasted malts. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly warming to finish with some bitter cocoa, decent roast, burnt earth. Lots of milky chocolate, too. This is one of the sweeter Eclipse beers we’ve had tonight, and with more chocolate and roast as well. Really, really good stuff.

Bottle at Bevolution party at Craft Beer Base. Woody, smoky nose, molasses, vanilla, light fruit and spice. Dark brown with lace. Sweet flavor of molasses, vanilla, honey, wood, spice, dried fruit, brandy. Refined and elegant, and much nicer than many a over-the-top bourbon barrel stout.

Tasting at Papsø’s
Pitch black color, with small brownish head. Aroma of cardboard, roasted malts, some leather. Sweetish roasted malt and chocolate flavor, some leather, light liquorice and tar, with a mild late alcohol feeling, and strong bitterness; the barrels only add some boozyness. Good.

Tasting at Gourmet Haus during SF Beer Week. Deep brown with a khaki head. The brandy barrel does not leave as smooth a taste as its bourbon sister. A little disjointed, but still a nice beer.

2011 bomber (Burgandy wax), #773 from The Davis Beer Shoppe in Davis, CA. Poured into a DeMolen snifter. Pours very black with a large creamy/frothy tan head. Aromas of chocolate and brandy. Full bodied. Flavor is very chocolate, followed by a vinosity which clarifies into brandy. Then oak is noticeable. So the flavors tend to follow one another. Not a trace of heat. Very smooth. Damn it’s good.

Bottle number 1818 from gotmos. This was a nice surprise that Boris gave me shortly after NYE. Pours with a small head. My nose is bombarded by aroma particles hitting my nostrils hard with chocolates and mineral. Not overwhelming intense but a nice aroma. Flavor is well fermented just enough residual sugar to accent the cocoa that has a mix of strong beer without being overwhelming. This beer is actually pretty sweet but in the "I like and it’s not bad" domain. The flavor is so amazing. There is a nice bItterness that comes along for the ride. Again mix of good flavors without just strong flavors. This is after 4 solid hours of all kinds of alcohol. Not sure what that means.

2011 bottle number 1585 thanks to billshmeinke. I am fairly certain that this also uses Christian Brother’s brandy and therefore should not be a new entry. Anyway. Black pour with a particularly large tan head that lasts. Aromas are big and fruity with wood, fudge, vinous notes, cola and vanillin. Flavors are nutty, toasty, roast, raisins, chocolate and cheap brandy (not quite E&J, but not too far off). Surprisingly lively carbonation, fuller bodied, and creamy. Not particularly warming.

Bottle @ chriso. Rating #8400. Pours a black color with a small tan head. Has a roasted malty chocoalte aroma with woody hints. Roasted malty chocolate flavor with some weak hints of oak. Has a roasted malty chocolate finish.

Bottle 22fl.oz.Clear dark black brown colour with a small to average, frothy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, light brown head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, caramel, chocolate, coffee, licorice, alcohol, wood notes. Flavour is heavy sweet and moderate to heavy bitter with a long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily - creamy, carbonation is soft. [20110918]
