(Previously labeled Blueberry Lambic). Blueberry is barrel-aged sour ale that combines the traditional Belgian-style sour with blueberries sourced from Michigan and Canada. We ferment our base blonde ale, Basis, over six to eight months in oak tanks to produce tart flavors, fruity notes, and a funky character. Then, we select a blend of individual batches for fruiting with whole blueberries for an additional three months, creating an intense blueberry fruit character with floral and dark fruit aromas. The final blend is bottle conditioned, resulting in a fine carbonation and spritzy mouthfeel. Blueberry is the perfect drink to share with
friends over a plate of good cheese and fresh fruit.

In the spring of 2006, I brewed 300 gallons of top-fermented beer using wild yeast to create a Belgian-style Lambic. We conditioned the beer in oak casks and then initiated a secondary fermentation in the casks using whole fruit from Huber's Orchard in Starlight, Indiana. You should experience a tart, almost sour taste balanced by the aromatic and richly flavorful addition of whole blueberries - perfect to share with friends, and a platter of good cheese and fresh fruit. - Caleb Staton, Head Brewer

750ml bottle pours a bright purple with a thin white head. Great nose, blueberry pie, floral, vanilla bean, buttery. Flavor is sweet, buttery, blueberry, lightly tart, lemon, no real funk. Medium bodied, sweet finish. While this had less complexity than the strawberry, this was smooth and really drinkable. Like a glass of blueberry pie.

Bottle thanks to Toby pours out a purple/red topped with no head. Aroma was very nice light tasty fruit, some wood, and light tartness. Taste more of the tart, some vinegar, blue berries pucker. Pretty good.

Big thanks to puzzl for this liter bottle. When popped, the brew exhibits some farmy smells. Can’t really detect much, if any blueberry aroma in there. Big sediment chunks in the bottom of the bottle. No head when poured and is suspiciously lacking any visible carbonation. First taste impressions confirm that observation, virtually flat. On the buds this stuff is sour, tart and just a tad of bitterness. Not sweet like lindemans and it lacks the farmy wet wool horse blanket attributes so common with many real lambics. Unsure of the blueberry flavors. Quite a taste treat and I’m glad to have had the chance to taste this stuff!

Bottle with thanks to tjthresh. Pours a deeply purplish brown with some soapy bubbles that are not carbonation (sadly) but just bubbles forming from the sloshing. They die quickly leaving a slightly foreboding-looking brew. Aromas are nice, though. Lots of lambic funk and tartness with a little bit of blueberry (or some fruit that I choose to identify as blueberry for obvious reasons.) Flavor simply does not live up to the expectations set forth in the nose, however. It has a bit of fruit and a bit of tartness to it, but it comes off as pretty watery, which when coupled with the lack of carbonation makes for a pretty good mess of a beer. I would hope that next year’s batch is considerably better than this... because this just ain’t it.
