This sturdy beer is strong both in taste and alcohol content (9%), boasting undeniably appealing flavours. The people of Montignies-sur-Roc, which lies to the south of Mons in the province of Hainaut, are known locally as Montagnards. It seemed perfectly natural then for a beer brewed in the village to be named La Montagnarde. Enlivened by a very sharp bouquet of fruitiness and spiciness, it has a stark taste, somewhere between intense bitterness and dreamy caramel. Absolutely sugar-free, this pure malt beer plays with a variety of flavours that soften the bitterness. There is a pepperiness at the back of the mouth and a tingling on the tongue. Its qualities continue to develop in the mouth, each element of its flavour having the chance to express itself individually. It is very active in the glass too, giving it a generous, long-lasting head. Its long finish highlights the ever-present bitterness, with a little less of the caramel. The finale evokes a kind of sugar-free gingerbread.

In 2019 the new 1979 label was introduced to commemorate the 40th jubilee of the brewery.

En stiltypisk trippel som när den är relativt färskt är söt, vass, småbubblig och spritig. Stor lagringspotential. Drag av farinsocker och jästig beska. God.

(Bottle, 0.75 l - BBE 2006, at Pikkulintu, 20120222) The beer poured amber with floating bits of yeast. Its head was small and white. Aroma had caramell, dates, malts and a hint of cardboard. Palate was medium bodied and dry with medium carbonation. Flavours were raisin, dates, mildly vinegar, caramell, malts and bitterness. Aftertaste was a bit sour, malty and mildly bitter. A messy beer but perhaps the aging conditions haven’t been perfect.

330ml bottle. Pours dark amber with a thin head. Aroma is sweet raisin malt. Taste is mostly raisin but it’s far to lively for any flavours to really shine. Some caramel and apple on the finish.

Clear deep orange to reddish amber beer, small off-white head, unstable. Aroma: sweet malts, some alcohol, fruits (dried and overripe), caramel malt, French toast. MF: good carbon, full body. Taste: chocolaty and malty start (like Ovomaltine drink), fruity, very fruity, peaches, strawberries and other summer fruits, some citrus, caramalts, toast, tangerines. Aftertaste: milk chocolate, some caramel, little bitter. Yup, they did it again!

21/03/2011 750ml bottle. Buon corpo, consistenza oleosa, carbonazione corretta.

33cl bottle. Brown colour with frothy tan head. Very carbonated beer, be careful after opening. Aroma is malty, chocolate/milk, spicy and candy sugar. Flavour is sweet, persistent, with a long final, with plumbcake and dry fruits notes. Carbonation is lively. Texture is oily. Body is medium to high.

75 cl bottle @ home, BBE 16.07.2013
Lots and lots of head. The foam starts to come out from my Feuillien glass even after the pouring was done. Aroma is nice, sweet and perfume-like with toffee and candi sugar. Flavour is rather sweet with candi sugar, toffee and some earthy notes. Spicy finish and rather sticky palate. Nice.

Deep amber with a good frothy head. Loads of sediments in the bottle. Sweet malty aroma, very fruity with a yeasty touch. Sweet malty taste, ripe fruit, bread, yeast, caramel ,sugar. Nice but inferior to other Abbaye de Rocs beers I had.
